Question Oly 300mm F2.8 lens, new for 300, any good?

I stumbled across this Ebay listing fro a Olympus 3/4 MC Arsat Yashma 2,8/300 mm Lens which an American seller is listing for a little over 300.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...T#ht_910wt_939

Does anyone know anything about this lens? There is a web link ( http://www.astrofotografia.pl/testy/200_300_400/ ) on the Ebay listing giving some further info. I am struggling to believe that it would be capable of anything special but you all might know something I don't.

Cheers

Chris

PS Just found other web links - http://www.novacon.com.br/lenses04.htm

Re: Oly 300mm F2.8 lens, new for 300, any good?

The lack of low dispersion glass (not obvious - it might do) is going to make wide-open shots very prone to CA and fringing - sample shots bear this out. I doubt the resolution is that good - FT bodies need more than other cropped-frame sensors as their pixels are proportionally smaller. In effect, you will be using it stopped-down most of the time, so the 70-300 would be a better bet, with AF and a lot lighter. Failing that, an old Nikon 300/2.8 can produce very good results and is about a 1.2Kg lighter - they are reasonably cheap on ebay.

Dear Andy,

Thanks for that, good advice indeed, I had never heard of the make before and I am certainly no expert on the huge range of MF lenses.

Cheers

Chris

I bought the Zuiko 70-300 for that kind of money. I love my lens, I take a lot of Motorsport pictures and it always seems to get me decent results.

Re: Oly 300mm F2.8 lens, new for 300, any good?

I suspect it's a Nikon mount with a Nikon to 4/3 adapter.

As far as I remember they only came out of the factory with a Nikon mount. The story was it was originally built for the KGB and is a copy of an early Japanese makers 300mm f2.8. There were 35mm SLR bodies built in Russia with a Nikon mount.

I saw a couple of tests/reviews in the late 80's/early 90's but can't remember how well it performed in them.

Hi Chris

I suspect that you will get far better results with the Oly 70-300mm to be honest - for less than 300 also. One often sees these cheap lenses, with long focal lengths on eBay et al, but you pay your money and you make your choice as they say.

I'd steer clear personally.

It will perform better than the no name, very long focal length, slow, pre-set lenses you see on eBay. I can't say how it would compare to the Olympus 70-300.

I wanted to try one years ago but forgot all about the lens until this thread reminded me about it.

Re: Oly 300mm F2.8 lens, new for 300, any good?

What I saw on the Polish site was softness at wide open, at 5.6 it was not too bad.
One other thing I saw was some color-fringing ( a thin blue line above the wing) indicating that the lens is undercorrected, but I could be wrong.

I will be a heavy beast that is usable from f:5.6 upwards, the 70-300 is a 5.6 at 300mm.

It may look cheap, but don't forget the shipping cost and customs, after that you might aswell look around localy.

Peter

Thanks to all of you that have taken the time to comment, interesting. I have to honest, I was not really intending to one. However, I am very interested to discover more about the lens.

There must be some good Russian glass available but it is a subject I know little about.

Cheers

Chris
