  • Cheviot Goat

Last night I camped right on the top of Simonside Crags in Northumberland to get some shots of the sunset and dawn as the forecast was perfect. As it happened the sunset/sunrise was useless, but every duff sunset has a silver lining. For years I'd been trying to get shots of the feral goats that roam the Cheviot Hills but I never came across any. While putting my tent up last night, I nearly stood on this one - which was 15 miles away from the nearest herd and in the wrong hills!

There's a couple more in the gallery.

    Fantastic picture.

    Did he charge?
Look, I'm an old man. I shouldn't be expected to put up with this.

Nice image, really crisp. The lighting of the background hills makes it look like a painted backdrop of a 60s, 70s movie.

I think the expression is great - sunset/sunrise no chance but, hey, you've got me!

A good, clear pic of a breed with which I was not familiar until today - thanks for sharing.

WOW, wild camping eh John... nice one.

Smashing shot of the Goat I must say, good one for catching it. Shame about the sunrise/sunset though - was it really that bad?

              Re: Cheviot Goat

              Thanks.

Ann1e: The Cheviot Goats were released by German Miners, not sure when, and according to this are a pure breed, a breed of what I don't know.
Edit - They may be much older than that. It looks very much like the etching here.

theMusicMan: Yep, it was pretty naff. The sunset cloud was too low, so when the sun fell beneath it, it was too low to light up the hills. Her Majesty's Forces made up for it a bit with a kind of military tattoo over the firing ranges. The dawn over the North Sea was a washout - cloud from the horizon up for about 45 degrees. This is all I got of any interest. However, I'd recommend this wild camping lark for a bit of excitement!

And to think William Holman Hunt went all the way to the Holy Land to paint a goat! ( http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?im...a%3DN%26um%3D1 )

He could have simply gone to Northumberland - yours looks much better!

Blimey, that's a scary animal. Imagine that outside the tent at 3:00am

What colour did he paint it?
