  • Bearded Tit

We managed to get close to a group of Bearded Tits earlier this week, it was the best opportunity to photograph them that I've ever had.

Terrific shots of a beautiful bird. I'm a little envious.

                      Thank you.

East Anglia is a stronghold for these little birds, even so, they are still relatively rare and difficult to see.

They can often be heard pinging around the reed beds they frequent and yet we still don't see them.

                        Thanks Ron.

We were extremely lucky to have had two good sessions with these birds, if you look at the first two images you'll notice that the wind is blowing the feathers of the bird.

Our first session lasted around 30 minutes but the wind picked up almost as soon as the birds arrived and was blowing them and the reeds around a lot, we were surprised that the birds held on as well as they did although they eventually gave in and sunk further down into the reed bed.

We went back a few days later, the weather was bright, very cold but very little wind. The birds showed up within minutes of our arrival and began feeding, we watched them for around an hour and a half.

At times the birds came so close that I couldn't get the whole bird into the frame and was having to walk backwards in order to do so, it was the best view of these birds we've ever had.

If you're interested, take a look in the Bearded Tits album on my Flickr site, there are a couple of videos of the birds feeding, one from each visit.

These were taken in Suffolk David, with an E-M1 II, 300mm Pro and MC-14.

At times the birds were probably with 2 - 3 metres of us.

Fantastic Dave. Funny but I was looking out yesterday thinking we have here, every Tit under the sun (including Tribes of Long Tailed), but never a Bearded. Thank you for a great insight.
