  • Goldcrest

Spotted whilst quietly stalking a fieldmouse (who refused to pose)

Europes smallest bird - again at fairly high iso (1250), E-3, 50-200, ec1.4, Master, The GIMP.

Cropped for character rather than detail.

Nice shot Nick You must have good eyes spotting the little chap, especially while chasing a fieldmouse!
    All the best,

I agree - a very good shot. First time I think I have seen this bird, so a big thanks for showing Nick.

Just like that - gone in a flash! Now in use.

        Re: Goldcrest

        Thanks Barr1e and Phil.

They are quite common little birds, but tend to be out of sight around bushes.

Hopefully I'll get a more conventional portrait shot - but I think this emphasises its size and how they are often seen.

(As for keen eyes - I think it's the hearing that counts as much - tells you someone is about and rustling the leaves)

Good shot, the stripe on it's head perfectly visible. I'm green with envy because we see this little bird seldom here only last Sunday my wife spotted one but I could not get a shot at it.

Great shot Nick, you did well to spot that and get a good capture for records.

I had one in the garden today but only had the 11-22mm on cam! The Goldcrest is small enough without making it smaller eh

Thank you John, it was a difficult capture as these things flit from under leaf to under leaf very quickly - he beat the focus speed on my old 50-200 several times. I hope you manage to capture a shot of one.

Thank you Henk and Owl, I hope my shot has helped demonstrate just how small these are.

                  Nick

I like the image as a whole especially the dusting of icing on the leaves. The long landscape crop also adds to the image.

Just a few brown shapes in the background which I would fiddle with and blur/clone away. But I am a fiddler.

I don't know the bird at all so I am envious of you stalking it so well. My cat stalks the field mice for me so I don't get many to shoot that aren't dazed and slobbered on.

                  Good shooting

                    Thank you Peter.

Luckily I'm less of a fiddler/perfectionist than you.

Hopefully I'll get to see and share more of this little fellow in the next few months.

Well done Nick - lovely shot of a very elusive bird

There's a british wildlife website I visit, and a common 'complaint' from photographers on there is just how difficult these tiny birds are to 'capture' successfully, so double well done!!

It's one I've never been successful with, either

Thank you Thea - I can appreciate the difficulty as these birds flit suddenly from the underside of leaf to leaf very quickly. Certainly the first subject that has made me want the reputed focussing speed of the newer SWD version.

That's a great shot - I never have managed to get a decent picture of one though I see them occasionally.

                          Well done!

                            Thank you Mike

I did have a high proportion of misses/blurs/ and unrecognizable bits sticking out from under leaves.

Jolly good pictures Nick, you ought to send them to a newspaper.
