  • Who uses Stylus 1?

I am looking for a camera to take on holiday, with out having to take lens etc with me.
Considering the Stylus 1, it seems to fit the bill still fairly compact, good lens range and using OM-D technology.

Who's using one, what are your thoughts?
    Derek

    Re: Who uses Stylus 1?

Hi Derek, I don't have the Stylus 1 - as yet, but it's in the pipeline - but had an earlier search for a camera for exactly the same reasons and the fact also, that I have additional issues.

After much searching, I found that the Stylus 1 ticked more boxes for general purpose togging.

You can possibly cope with most types of weather conditions, but over the years I've found dust can be a killer. The Stylus 1, like the XZ-1 and XZ-2 all have, IMHO, a crappy dust cap. This can be circumvented by a TCON tube attachment fitted with a filter and/or a 3rd party lens cap. The lens for the three camera's mentioned above do not have a thread onto which a filter can be directly fitted.

Once fitted, perhaps not ideal in many situations, but can be stripped down and kept handy. It also doesn't appear to affect the wide coverage. The TCON 17x set-up, if fitted, extends the range to over 500mm.

If you're into panorama's, the Stylus 1 can stitch upto 10 frames.
It's not what inspires us that is important, it's where the journey takes us.

The Stylus 'Traveller' SH-2 looks promising. This new release may have a downward effect on the price of the Stylus 1???

Me! I like to take it to places where my normal kit is too much, such as to the airport to see off my daughters as they travel etc. One thing that you need to remember with that smaller sensor is that it has less dynamic range range than the later PENs & OM-D's with little (or no) headroom if clipping highlights. It's great for indoor shots & with flash. In a confined space where low flash power is used I can use continuous sequence (at up to 7 fps without flash) as it fires off frames at least at 1 fps with the flash.

Here's a few photos I've taken with it.

Clicking on the photos will take you to my Four Thirds User gallery where there are more photos.

Here's one I took at the airport through the glass & edited the raw file in Capture One for a better result.

          The original

I do love this camera with what it can do & it is even better with Version 2.0 firmware now.

          I hope that helps.

The sample photos here and on Robin Wong's pages say it all really. They're good enough but not as good as you'd get from an EM1/5 or EP5 with a prime or one of the better zooms. 10x lenses, especially small ones, will always be a compromise of quality versus weight/price/size/convenience.

Thanks to all who have replied, reviews of the Stylus are positive.
I think it will be ideal for travel holiday photography, not a E-M1 replacement but a useful addition. There are always those time you don't take a camera because a small compact is not enough but CSC or DSLR is too much.

                Re: Who uses Stylus 1?

I have the EM1, had the EM5, but also have the Stylus 1, with recent firmware has also got time lapse as an option too... it's handy and light and the spare Olympus batteries not expensive either. I do have the Tcon tube for filters and to act as a good cover and lens protection. No regrets and quite happy with results. The Traveller lens doesn't have the reach of the Stylus 1 which is a good reason why I think the Stylus one has lots of control like the EM5 etc. but the convenience of the size.

Thanks for posting the images Ross, definitely nothing wrong there ver good images.
Now I think it is a case of finding one at the best deal. Still got a few weeks before we go away, so time look around.

I had discounted the Traveller as I like the range of the Stylus 1 lens.
Robin Wong review is an interesting read.
I also like fact unlike most compact with the Stylus you something to get hold of.

                        Re: Who uses Stylus 1?

I may have this wrong but I believe I read in one of the many reviews I trawled through that the Stylus 1 has a second zoom selection - digital zoom - which can extend the zoom range to 600mm.

If so, can anyone show what end result does it produce?

Found the review in question, you can review it -> here
