  • Rannoch Moor and More

Another weekend, another trip to one of Scotland's iconic locations with IainMacD. This time we decided to grin and bear it for a 'sunrise shoot' picking Rannoch Moor as our starting point based on the BBC forecast. There was much grinning and bearing for this one as it is a 3 hour drive to Rannoch for me and 2 hours for Iain but we duly arrived at 0615 to a beautifully twilight lit, misty Loch Ba.

    1.

The twilight colours faded quite quickly and we waited expectantly for the sunrise. The mist was quite patchy and at times the landscape became almost monochromatic.

    2.

    3.

At last the sun made an appearance, subtle, muted colours at first but then a rather nice orange glow.

    4.

    5.

    6.

Almost as quickly as it arrived the sun and colour were lost and we were left with the mist and low cloud scudding across the loch and distant hills.

    7.

We left Ba for a short while to photograph a couple of different nearby lochans but returned later once the mist had finally dissipated and the sun was much higher in the sky. The loch was now breathlessly still (unfortunately the midges were now out in force ); this image is looking towards the Black Mount.

    8.

From here we decided to take a slow meander home, stopping where the mood took us. First stop was Buachaille Etive Mor. Surprisingly there was very little water flowing in the stream but it meant we could clamber over the rocks for a different perspective. I didn't manage any great images but did get another soaking when I slipped on a mossy rock. Iain managed much more successfully.

    9.

Our final destination for the day was at Chia-Aig Falls near Loch Arkaig. Iain is much better at this sort of thing than me but I was impressed by the shape of the upper part of the falls.

    10.

Another great day out and well worth the early start (well I thought so ). There was some discussion on one of our previous threads about a possible 'Highland' meet. Iain and I were discussing it yesterday and suggested a possible date of 11/12 Oct if anyone is interested?

(Apologies for the amount of images here - I'm rubbish at selecting my own favourites!!)

Great set, well done. I particularly love the first three - the second has a texture almost as if it's painted on velvet.

Great set of images Steve, you really captured the atmosphere at Loch Ba expertly and you've nailed the waterfall shot. I will be starting to process my images shortly but I doubt I'll match the quality of yours.
It would be great if we can have a Highland forum meet on the 11th or 12th of next month; would anyone like to request/suggest any locations?

Lovely set. The wonderfully unsaturated looking 3 and 7 are my favourites.

Steve, never, ever apologise for posting too many pictures! This set is a real treat and there isn't one for which I wouldn't happily drive 3 hours to capture on its own. Picking favourites is almost impossibe, but I am particularly impressed by Nos 2, 5 & 1.

A great set, I enjoyed looking at them all; but #3 is astonishing, a perfect pastel watercolour of a shot - I'd have been happy with just this one.

Just to ad my admiration for these absolutely beautiful set of images. That very light processing gives them a very delicate feel. Yep just really beautiful.

Number 6 is just sublime. Absolute perfection. One day I'll get up early enough for sunrise - at least that's what I keep telling myself. And after seeing these, I really really will make that effort now!
I'm heading up to Loch Arkaig in a fortnight to visit my big sis - she's just built a house about a mile further on up the road from the waterfall. Hope the midges have gone by then.

Greg and I were both quite keen to come up for a Highland meet, probably travelling up together. Unfortunately I wouldn't be able to manage the weekend of the 11th/12th October.

Well Steve, you are a difficult act to follow!

Here is my first shot of the day taken (on auto-pilot) at the ungodly hour of 6:25am

                            1.

Another from Loch Ba only slightly later:

                            2.

My take on the sun making an appearance:

                            3.

Later in the morning from the other side of Loch Ba:

                            4.

This could be the shot I was lining up in Steve's picture 9:

                            5.
(I'm not sure it was worth risking wet feet?)

A slightly different placement with a bit more Buachaille:

                            6.

                            Thanks for looking
