Price of new 25mm f1.8 standard lens

Why is it that Olympus sells the new 25mm f1.8 standard lens for 369 and other manufacturers typically charge less than 150 or even 100 for the equivalent piece of glass???? Standard lenses should be one of the cheapest in the range. I know the OM 50mm f1.8 was back in the day.

Probably because that's the price they think they can get away with.

One of the bargains in the Canon world is the 50mm.

Re: Price of new 25mm f1.8 standard lens

That's very expensive. I would have expected the price to be about the same as the 45mm f1.8. Maybe it will be discounted once it has been out for a while.

It does seem dear, although it's not an unambitious design, optically.

I agree. At £250-£280, they'd have immediately sold a good many. Personally, I'll wait until it drops to near 45/1.8 level- maybe this time next year. In the meantime, the Pany 25/1.4 can be had used for a little over £300.

It's got to be said the Panny is a deal bulkier and heavier. It also has in-built stabilization. The Olympus balances better on the lighter E-M10 body, whereas the Panny suits the E-M1. Mind you, I do like the 45mm on the E-M1. Which is a similar size and weight to the Oly 25mm.

I wonder how much the lens hood and pouch will cost.

Re: Price of new 25mm f1.8 standard lens

I don't see any logic to the argument that 'a stardard lens should be one of the cheapest in the range' at all.

The PL25/1.4 for 43 was massively most expensive but there weren't a whole load of posts about how a lens of that focal length on 43 shouldn't be expensive.

The only issue for me would be whether the IQ matches the pricing - it's a value proposition not a price one.

I agree.
Surely the term "Standard" in this context relates purely to the field of view.

The price will relate to the quality and performance of the lens.

Regards.

I was expecting £230, the same price as the 45mm.
Maybe they're just "trying it on" for a while ...

Far to logical a reply photo owl. I'd pay more than that for a faster manual focus prime.

If the 'opposition' can make great 'standard' lenses of a similar speed for 150 or less, why can't Olympus? And yes I did mean standard view, 50mm in old money.

Hi Stephen,
I don't seem to remember in-built stabilization in my (now gone) copy of the Panny 25
For what it's worth I think Panny size is more to do with with the aperture, f/1.4 verses f/1.8.

The Oly 25 looks interesting but as many others have commented I'll wait to see if the price drops a little before seriously considering it.

Beacuase they start working from old designs and have not changed there lens to correct it sensor size appropriate.
Do Nikon offer a 33mm f1.8?
Do Canon offer a 31mm f.8

Lets face it when you bought an SLR with a 50mm f1.8 you immediatley sarting looking something else to use instead. For me it was a 28 mm f2.8.

There are other potential primes that would have me more interested.

As has been said IQ will be key to succes or lack of.
