  • The Tiny Town of Thoona

The tiny town of Thoona is a blip on the map 33km (20mi) west of Wangaratta.
It's claim to fame lies in its annual wheelie bin race down the main street which attracts thousands of spectators.
    1.
The Thoona Pub is an institution famed for its Weekend Roasts (Note the wheelie bin on roof) The event is held in March

    2.
This arial view shows the complete town and locates the pub and the General Store opposite

    3.
    Today's Roast Beef $14.00AU (@ today's rate ₤8.46)

    4.
Somewhat tidier inside than the store's street window display would suggest - this was shot through a dusty front door panel.
    5.

The Dark Chocolate Pudding was something of a work of art ...
    6.

Of course photos of our Aussie sporting heroes adorn the walls, although we aren't talking cricket at the moment ! ! !
    7 .
And that bloody picture hangin' crooked on the wall bugs me!

Very unfair indeed, Mark, not lunchtime for a few hours yet Would love to see pics of the Bin race, perhaps next year?
The picture tells the story, great when you have a bad memory.DW.

A one-horse town, and it looks like that horse is on the plate!

The bin race involves one person inside the bin being pushed by another. I don't have details of just how far. No doubt I will find that out next year.

I must admit that the presentation of today's dinner fell far short that which was served on our last visit. But I can say that it was nonetheless delicious.

So their beef is supplied by Tesco too, then?

You've just made me feel hungry, Mark!

Another vote for pics of the bin race next March.

A bin man knocked on the door of a house and a Japanese guy answered. The bin man said, "Where's yer bin?"

The Japanese guy replied, "I've bin to Tokyo."

"No, no, where's yer wheelie bin?"

            "I've weally bin to Tokyo."

            ......I'll get my coat.

That looks soo peaceful there & your roast beef reminded me to lift out the leg of lamb to thaw for tomorrow nights dinner (a bit of a special day).

Are you giving cheek again? That's OK, Mark dishes out enough himself.

Nice set Mark, the pub looks warm and welcoming, food looks good too.

Another thumbs up for pics of the wheelie bin race next time round.

Yes John, I've heard a less savoury version of that gag too !

Nothing like the old Sunday roast leg-o-lamb flooded with mint sauce, is there, Ross!

Thanks Tom, I'm afraid that above I've inadvertently misled you all in assuming the race was such as the Tasmanian version.
Apparently the Thoona version is way more sophisticated and I will look forward to next year's event!
Here are some local newspaper links which give an insight to the event.

No, that'd be for lamb chops & veggies. The lamb roast has gotta have rosemary (cut fresh from the herb garden) cooked with it to be a 'lamb roast'! If I remember, I'll take a photo of it.

Our lad Stephen don't like lamb ... neither did Sandra and her family 'til they migrated to Oz and tasted the fair dinkum deal ... now they all wander around looking sheepish !
