Hopes for a new M telephoto prime.

Seeing the news that Sony, who make the E-M5 sensor, will produce a new 400mm f4 prime for their A mount cameras with help from Olympus is there now a chance that this can migrate to M4/3? Fingers crossed!

David

400mm f/4 - it will be a big and heavy old beast, methinks

Why Ian - the M4/3 X-300mm zooms aren't - surely a prime would be easier to construct, or am I demonstrating my ignorance?

Hi James, it's the relationship between aperture and focal length that's key.
As Ian says a 400 mm f/4 lens will be big, no getting away from it.

A comparitively small and light 400mm would be possible, if you don't mind a maximum apaerture of around f8. However, I don't think David, the OP, is particularly concerned with small and light, he just wants a lens that will get the job done!

Re: Hopes for a new M telephoto prime.

If exotic materials for the optics were used and perhaps there was a compromise in other areas, you could probably make the lens shorter or lighter, but I wouldn't think you could do either if you wanted top notch optical quality.

The 75-300 is relatively small because it's not very fast - f/4.8-6.7. So At 300mm (f/6.7) it's nearly a stop and a half slower than a 300mm f/4.

Canon's EF 400mm f/4 DO IS USM uses diffractive optics to reduce size and weight and that lens is still nigh on 2kg, although it is impressively short at around 9 inches - an inch and half shorter than the EF 400mm f/5.6 (1.25kg).

Re: Hopes for a new M telephoto prime.

But it doesn't need to be f4, the Canon EF 400mm f5.6 I regularly use on my E-M5 is fast enough for modern sensors and only weighs just over a kilo and it's a 19 year old design - an up to date auto M4/3 400mm f5.6 or even f6.3 would weigh a lot less and be smaller.
