I decided to arrange a day out for myself and my wife to London on Thursday. I do hope she doesn't read this or it will spoil some of the surprise(s).
So it started off with me wondering if there were any tickets for Les Miserables for this week. The only two I could find sitting together were for the Thursday afternoon matinee - the most expensive tickets. Anyway, after much debate with myself I decided to book them.
Then I thought, wouldn't it be nice to have lunch at the Ritz before going to the theatre, I wonder if there's a table free for 12.00 on Thursday? There was, so I booked that.
Then I noticed that there was a Pre-Raphelites exhibition at Tate Britain. My wife is an Art History graduate and a big fan of the Pre-Raphelites. So I booked that for 10.00.
Then yesterday I thought, she would really like to see Billy Elliott, I wonder if there would be any tickets for Thursday evening? There were, so booked those for 7.30 - the most expensive ones again. Then I noticed that the theatre have a deal with a local hotel for dinner so I booked that for 6.00.
So all in all, Thursday is going to be a very expensive, very busy and very long day which will consist of:
Leave home 5.30am.
Hopefully park in Victoria Station car park, if not a multi storey in Pimlico (both are outside the congestion charge zone and handy for Tate Britain where we'll start and Victoria Palace Theatre where we'll end).
10.00 Exhibition at Tate Britain
12.00 The Ritz for lunch
2.30 Queens Theatre for Les Miserables
6.00 Reubens Hotel, Buckingham Palace Road, for dinner
7.30 Victoria Palace Theatre for Billy Elliot
10.30/11.00 back to the car to drive home
I could have bought a 75mm/1.8 for the money the day will cost. We've both come into some money this year due to family bereavements and we would have had an overseas holiday but the dog is too old to go into kennels and we don't feel we can inflict him on anyone, so this one day will have to do instead (daughter is going to dog-sit for the day).
I would have liked to go to the Oxo Tower to take photos and to the Ansel Adams Exhibition at Greenwich, but never mind.
And then on Friday I have to drive my daughter down to Falmouth. I must be mad...
I've told my wife that we're going to London and that we're going to Tate Britain and that after that we're going 'somewhere posh' (so she can have hair done and sort out appropriate clothes and shoes) but she doesn't know any of the other details. I can't wait to see her face when we get a taxi from the Tate and I say, 'To the Ritz please'!
