  • Mayor on a mare

Well, OK, maybe not a mare, I think it was a gelding. I'm not too sure on horse terminology so I stand to be corrected. But Mayor on a gelding doesn't make such a good title, does it?

Anyway, I work as a part time chauffeur and that includes working for a local council driving the Mayor around. I also double as event photographer. Yesterday we visited Riding For The Disabled, a local charity that works with disabled children. After the youngsters had demonstrated their riding skills the Mayor was asked if she wanted a go. She's nearly 70 but she enthusiastically agreed.

These days there is no Mayor and Mayoress, it is Mayor and Consort. The Consort can be anyone, a spouse, relative, friend, whatever. In this case the Mayor's Consort is her father. He's 90. Did he want a go on the horse? You bet he did!

These were taken with the E-M5 and 45mm. The lighting was dodgy - a mixture of rooflights and fluorescent lights. I decided to shoot at 1600 ISO and F2 which would give a shutter speed of about 1/100th. Although they weren't exactly going very fast I figured there might be some movement to be taken into account. Shooting at F2 left very little depth of field on the close shots, of course, which meant that I couldn't get the wonderful horse in focus but that couldn't be helped. The E-M5 did miss focus quite a bit - or should I say, I missed focus quite a bit. In the fifth shot, for instance, the focus plane is just in front of his face, despite the fact that I had face priority on. There is also some blue flare from the fluorescent lights in some shots - haven't had a chance to clone that out in Elements yet. I'm off to work again in a minute.

    I wonder if I'll be riding a horse when I'm 90?

He's an amazing character. The other day they had a full day of engagements lasting about 12 hours altogether with only a 1 hour break. They finished about 9.00pm but he didn't want to be taken home. I dropped him off at the pub where he was meeting his mates. And in the car he was trying to convince his daughter of the merits of online shopping.

Nice images and well captured. I mainly use my E-M5 with a Leica 14-150mm which is a 4/3rds lens and although it does sometimes hunt in low light it is always spot on with the focus even with children.

Excellent capture of the moment Roger. Who cares about the odd missed focus. What lovely characters you've portrayed.

What a wonderful story to go with a great set of photographs! I'd be confident of increasing the ISO at least another stop with the E-M5.

I love the horse ... but wish they had groomed and cleaned off that "stable stain" down the back leg for the EVENT Roger, I am afraid I would have edited that green stain out

Thanks David. I guess shooting at F2 is more challenging for the focus due to the smaller depth of field. That's interesting about the Leica lens, though.

Thanks Phil. I would rather not have missed focus shots, but at least I did get some decent ones.

Thanks John. I did think about shooting at ISO 3200, or even 6400, but I thought F2 would be good for blurring the background in the nearer shots.

Oh dear, sorry the grooming didn't come up to standard. You're right about the green stain - hadn't thought about that before. This was at an agricultural college too...

Good photos Roger, you got the lighting fine, they look natural.

He looks younger than she does!

(My Uncle was mayor of Todmorden for a while. Trivia for you.)

Thanks Ulfic. She gets quite cross when he gets mistaken for her husband! Actually, she had more trouble getting on and off the horse than she did.

She is a county mayor so it's a full time job for the year that she's in office.

My uncle was mayor of a small town too (Cowbridge in the Vale of Glamorgan).

What a great set, I really enjoyed reading about this fab couple and seeing your photos.
Nearly 70 myself, I marvel at their stamina. A wonderful example of how community involvement and keeping busy keeps you young. More power to their elbows!
