Olympus warranties - they CAN be transferred

I saw a mention in a recent thread here that referred to the transferability of Olympus warrantys. The belief, based on a previous communication with Olympus UK, was that warranties can't be transferred. So I queried this with Olympus UK as I wasn't sure the original information was correct. This is the reply:

So long the camera is still within the warranty period and a proof of purchase from the original retailer is provided, the warranty will be honoured.

We only refuse second hand cameras where someone is trying to use their e-bay receipt or similar as proof of warranty when they bought the camera second hand.

So there you have it!

That's good to know, makes the purchase of used gear that bit less risky.

I too queried Oly support, very recently, while I was on to them about a different matter and the statement I got from that person was to the effect of: "theoretically the warranty is not transferrable, but we wouldn't check to make sure you were the purchaser." It all seemed a bit vague and strange. So I've just read all the small print on the warranty card, and I never saw the words "not transferrable", it just refers to "the customer", and indeed implies that if you can prove the item is under warranty then they'll honour it.

Thanks for clearing the matter up in a more formal manner.

As a final note, I have found Oly support to be very reasonable and not at all dogmatic about things such as this. A bit chaotic sometimes, but never unreasonable.

In the past couple of years I have sold an Oly Stylus-1 and an Oly XZ-2 and each time I phoned Olympus UK and I was told that warranty is not transferable and I made that clear to the buyers. Maybe Oly do not check, but there must still remain some risk. As also being a Canon user, I have bought grey market bodies and lenses with warranty cards that stated clearly that the warranty was only valid in USA and Canada, yet two L series lenses were repaired inside the warranty period by Canon UK. So maybe manufacturers are sympathetic, or too bothered to make checks. But I still believe that used prices compared to new grey market prices are just too high.

Apologies for confusing the issue. I posted the above before I saw the posting with what seems to be a clear policy statement from Olympus. The matter seems to be cleared up.

If you extend the warranty within two years do you get five years cover or five and a half years?

Couldnt agree more would have been nice to have the option mind 🤔
