In a recent thread it was hinted that the name of a Narrow Boat, registered in Harwich which translated as "Gateway to Heaven" might not be entirely appropriate.
I posted a reply which pointed out that as the Mayflower which took the Pilgrim Fathers to America was a Harwich ship with a Harwich Master and some might think otherwise.
So, yesterday I was out birding on the Stour estuary and as the sun came out I continued on to Harwich to get some photos.
The old part of Harwich is a preservation area and has many fine buildings both old and new.
Here is the former Great Eastern Hotel on the quayside which is now used as appartments.

And here is an interesting plaque on it.

Just round the corner in Kings Head St. Captain Christopher Jones house still stands.

Across the street the Alma Inn used to be the home of his first wife Sara.

Just up the street another beautifully preserved house of the same era.

At the bottom of the street, next to the old hotel is the more modern Harwich Haven Authority building.

"Old Harwich" is actually a well preserved and historic area with lots of things to see and do. I will post some more shots of the area later.
Thanks for looking.
