Re: E-group Olympus Pen competition - the details!
This is great news and should create a lot of excitement. I'm just going to look through the galleries to see who I should kidnap and hold captive for the next month! Thank goodness not everyone here uses a Pen, although that will make it a tough competition on Four Thirds User as well.
I'll certainly have a go although with the talent we have here I don't expect to win - I'll gladly settle for a picture in the book if I can manage that!

Re: E-group Olympus Pen competition - the details!
Well of course I went to have a look at the Four thirds User site and was immediately taken by the current competition that is shown on the right hand column of the home page . . . . "CLOSED: Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 to be won during December" - definitely time for an update me thinks to the competition which is now nearly a year out of date and the product which is now on version X4!Originally posted by Ian View Post* First of all - we're not overlooking Olympus DSLR fans; a competition for you will be announced on our sibling site Four Thirds User immininetly *
Anyhow, I'll look forward to seeing what competition will be offered to the Oly DSLR users - a prize of a big lens would be nice.

Whilst I have no wish to be rude and I am sure it is not your intention, are you suggesting this forum is heading more toward micro four thirds users and DSLR users should start looking to the other site?

Have a look at Four Thirds User and you'ld think that Oly DSLRs have all but disappeared, so perhaps we luddites are being herded into the part of the internet never to be seen again? Still at least the top of this page has the image of a huge great Oly DSLR beside a cute small Oly micro four thirds - now if that size comparison doesn't scare you off using an Oly DSLR . . . .!!Originally posted by greenguru View Post* First of all - we're not overlooking Olympus DSLR fans; a competition for you will be announced on our sibling site Four Thirds User immininetly *

Re: E-group Olympus Pen competition - the details!
Oh dear, I guess Ian was in a "no win" situation, whatever he did. If the competitions were allocated the other way round, members of FTU would no doubt be asking the same question. To have staged both competitions on one forum would have seriously upset members of the other, plus the publicity would not have reached so many people.Originally posted by greenguru View Post* First of all - we're not overlooking Olympus DSLR fans; a competition for you will be announced on our sibling site Four Thirds User immininetly *

I can assure you that it's certainly not the intention that DSLR users should look elsewhere. I'm an active member of both sites and I would say this site is certainly still weighted more towards DSLRs whilst FTU is starting to lean more towards Micro Four Thirds, which is hardly surprising seeing as how that forum also embraces Panasonic more specifically than this one.
Also, we should bear in mind that this site is sponsored by Olympus and I think they are entitled to expect the Pens to be represented here more strongly than they are at present. Hopefully this competition will attract more Pen users to join us and give a better overall balance. Hopefully, too, it will encourage existing Olympus DSLR owners to consider a Pen as well.
Much as we all love our Olympus DSLRs it's inescapable that micro Four Thirds represents the bulk of the company's present and future strategy. Regular Four Thirds will remain an important part of the E-System, particularly for advanced amateurs and pros, until the two platforms can be fully and successfully integrated. Indeed, Olympus could have chosen just to run one competition, for Pen owners only. The fact that they are also running a competition for DSLR owners demonstrates that they very clearly still value their Four Thirds DSLRs and lenses and the users of that system.
I hope everyone can look forward to these competitions without worrying about unintended implications being read into them, there really is no hidden agenda and whilst we certainly hope to make new Pen friends (that even made me groan!) we definitely want to hold onto our solid base of existing DSLR users. However, it's also an opportunity for those users to become aquainted with the "other site." A lot of good stuff goes on there and it's really not a case of either/or; by participating on both forums you really can have your cake and eat it!

Re: E-group Olympus Pen competition - the details!
Hehe, the E-3 is gripped, after all, and in that guise it's certainly not the smallest DSLR! It's interesting to note that the image of a Pen has only been added to the header comparitively recently, maybe it really is high time to promote it a lot more. Promoting E-System DSLRs here really is just preaching to the converted. We all know how good they are, but do we really know how good the Pens are? I use both and I adore my E-3, but my E-PL1 is fantastic too!Originally posted by catkins View PostHave a look at Four Thirds User and you'ld think that Oly DSLRs have all but disappeared, so perhaps we luddites are being herded into the part of the internet never to be seen again? Re: E-group Olympus Pen competition - the details!
One of the great features of the Pens is the vast range of lenses that they have access to so I certainly hope iimages taken with legacy, ZD lenses or the various specialist lenses coming onto the market will be allowed to enter.Originally posted by Zuiko View PostThat's the 64,000 ISO question, which I'm sure will be clarified when Ian posts the rules and instructions!
For example a great moon image taken with a legacy lens would certainly impress me as I was flipping through the book, but no I do not have one I am just waiting to enter!

Hi Chris, the Four Thirds comp will be detailed this morning. The prize is the same value as the Pen competitionOriginally posted by catkins View PostWell of course I went to have a look at the Four thirds User site and was immediately taken by the current competition that is shown on the right hand column of the home page . . . . Re: E-group Olympus Pen competition - the details!
I will get this clarified but I don't think there will be a problem. Olympus has actually suggested that we stock Leica and other adapters for our hire service, for example. The versatility of the Micro Four Thirds mount is one of the systems appeals.Originally posted by Zuiko View PostThat's the 64,000 ISO question, which I'm sure will be clarified when Ian posts the rules and instructions!

Re: E-group Olympus Pen competition - the details!
On the contrary, I simply wanted to pre-empt any jumping to conclusions. There is no way around the fact that Olympus us actively marketing the Pen line, but it still manufactures and sells Four Thirds, too. In fact the E-5 stimulated increased demand and production of the high-end lenses, for example. I felt it was simpler to put one competition on FTU and one here. That way they two sites will promote each other. Both sites are 100% behind both FT and MFT. The main difference is that FTU is aimed at a more international audience and has a more editorial base. This site is primarily (but not exclusively) for Olympus users and products while FTU is for all things FT and MFT regardless of brand.Originally posted by greenguru View Post* First of all - we're not overlooking Olympus DSLR fans; a competition for you will be announced on our sibling site Four Thirds User immininetly *
