  • 50-200 SWD and EC20 - broken?

    Hi

After developing some more pictures from my vacations in Greece I have started to believe something is wrong with either my EC20, my 50-200 SWD or both.

Can anyone explain the pheomenon in these photos? I have taken many sun up/down pictures before (not with this lens/TC though) and never have seen such reflections, not even with cheapest P&S cameras.

Any thoughts what is behind this highly appreciated.

Could that be a flare effect Tord, it certainly looks unusual.

Did you have a filter on the lens?

Not exactly the same, but similar in that there is a burnt out area in the image and a reflection showing. I was advised at the time by a photographer neighbour that this was down to the filter on my 70-300mm?

So I don't think it is your lens or EC-20

I would also say it was the filter and internal reflections.

              ISO 100, 1/400s, F6.3

And yes there was a Hoya UV filter.

I too thought of the filter problem. I would try more shots of the same type without it fitted before thinking of a service.

The double image looks very much like a filter problem to me, hence the question. It's round, with no shape of aperture blades, so unlikely to be internal to the lens, and the double image is about the same size as the sun.

This is why I stopped leaving a UV filter on by default.

I think everyone should leave at least one protective filter on all the time.

It's actually better to stack 2 or 3, then if you break the outer one you've still got one or two protecting the lens. It's far better to reduce image quality than risk a scratched front element.
It's the image that's important, not the tools used to make it.

Hopefully we're not going to get into the usual protective filter (or not) debate - otherwise I may have to post my story about the rampaging tiger again!!

                            Hi,

I replaced the filter and to my surprise the IQ improved substantially, assessing the sharpness of pictures taken using a tripod. The original filter was neither dirty nor scratched so I am really surprised about the difference.

Yet to capture a sunset/sunrise, though.

Now you should stack the original one on top of the new one for extra protection.
