E510 Dust!!

I seem to have developed a nasty case of dust in the viewfinder of my E510, it's not inside the main body (mirror etc) I know this because I have given the insides a good scrub with soap and water

When held to the light with no lens the dust/dirt specs are very evident against the white background, however they do not appear on any photos so is not a major issue from that point of view, just an irritating one as it is obviously noticable when composing a shot, I have enough distractions already i.e. myself and do not need to add to this

If anyone knows of a cure I would be grateful for any advice, bearing in mind that I am not an engineer (I'm the sort of person that always has bits left over after any sort of DIY) so stripping the camera down into hundreds of bits is not really an option.

Cheers
Neil

Re: E510 Dust!!

It may be on your focus screen (either side) or behind the screen.

I have this on one of my E510. Don’t try to clean it.....you will probably make it worse.

Have you tried a Arctic Butterfly dust remover. It is designed to remove dust from sensors, but I use mine to remove any loose dust from my camera. It’s great because you do not(should not) touch it against any surface and it attracts the dust.

BTW I do not work for VisibleDust, it’s just that they make some useful products.

Re: E510 Dust!!

Thanks for your thoughts John, I have tried this method, it looks like the problem must be behind the screen.
Oh well looks like I will just have to live with it

Cheers

Not owning a E-510 I am unsure of this, but does the focus screen not clip out, if so you should be able to remove it a clean the screen and the area around it?

Re: E510 Dust!!

Jim,

Yes the screen does come out.

The problem is that you may introduce more dust, unless you have a nice clean room.

Re: E510 Dust!!

The focus screen is also very delicate and prone to scratches - as many replacing it with a Katz Eye or similar have discovered. If you want to go ahead, you may find this helpful:

If it really bothers you, it may be worth having it cleaned professionally.

Re: E510 Dust!!

I agree with Hugh - be careful when dusting off the focus screen! I recall damaging one of the 2 series OM ones several years ago. I seemed to introduce more dust and a scratch by the time I had finished. A replacement was expensive.

I have been successful since though. I use a small fine haired blower brush and *very gently* dust the screen off from the centre out. I hold the screen with a pair of tweezers as grease from fingertips can mark them, and will probably attract more dust.

Good Luck! Steve.

Re: E510 Dust!!

As I have said in another thread, new focus screens do not cost much £12ish.

After my attempt at cleaning, it would have worked out a lot cheaper to get a new one.

Again, watch out for dust getting behind the screen.

Re: E510 Dust!!

I've come to the conclusion I have dust behind the screen on my E400. I've tried brushing and blowing it, removing the screen and cleaning it, but one speck seems to be attached to the glass of the pentamirror. At some point this summer (once I have a E510 as stand in) it is going to go back to Oly for a proper clean and a new screen. Expensive lesson, I guess.

Re: E510 Dust!!

Most local camera shops offer a cleaning service. Yes, most send the camera away, but it maybe cheaper than sending it back to olympus....unless the camera is in the warentee period, in which case you may be able to negitiate a FOC repair.

Re: E510 Dust!!

I, too, have had this problem, twice. I sent it in for a warranty-covered cleaning, but it did not do the job. The second time, they replaced the fresnel screen, which was damaged from my first attempts to clean it. It was much worse after I attempted to do the cleaning. so be very careful.
