  • Mac or PC?

BEFORE anyone kicks off, I've NOT started this thread to debate the pros and cons of either system. I've done it because there are many of us, myself included, who are genuinely interested to find the optimum specification of either system for photo editing.

Although I'm an ex- IT Manager, my knowledge is by no means current, so I'm throwing it open to others who are current in the relevant system to give hints, tips, and specifications for both systems.

I'll repeat, I do NOT want to start a slanging match between the two systems - they both have their merits and demerits.

Never used a Mac, but you will find you are paying for the name. If you want bang for bucks then it has to be a Pc. Especialy as they come with w7 rather than the pain that was vista. But as i said i have never used a Mac.

Steve, thanks for your input but I'm NOT asking which system is best. Just what's the best spec on each system.

The thing is, it is so difficult NOT to make this a Mac vs PC debate, as that IS what this thread actually is!!

        Steve - You say...

Perhaps I'm not making myself clear. Or perhaps I should have started two threads - what is the optimum spec for a PC for photo editing, and what is the optimum spec for a Mac for photo editing.

            Re: Mac or PC?

For a Mac see www.macperformanceguide.com (if you would like an enthusiast/professional solution).

I've used Photoshop Elements on both the following with satisfactory results.
            PC - homebuild
3mhz Intel core 2 duo processor
            4gb memory (3.25 gb actual)
            320gb WD hard disk
            Dell U2410 monitor.

            Mac - Mini
2.53mhz Intel core 2 duo processor
            4gb memory
            320gb hard disk
            Dell U2410 monitor.

I don't favour the modern Mac monitors or Imac as I can't calibrate the glossy screen satisfactorily and find the glare troublesome.

They are both the same... the optimum spec for a Pc is the same these days as for a Mac.
Simple as. They will both be able to run the same procesors and memory.

But in the end it is personal preference and finance that normally determines what you buy.

                  Re: Mac or PC?

I've not used a PC specifically for photo editing, so I am not qualified and therefore can't really comment on that. However, I found that the Macbook was fine (when I had it) for everything I did with it, including photo editing... but after 4 yrs with that initial Mac machine I recently upgraded to a Macbook Pro, and it is perfect. It flies.

                  Spec is 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5, 8GB DDR3.

while I was positng other's have, and make the point I was making better.

It's all about price. There are some cracking deals on refurb machines if you hunt around, I used to build PC's for pocket money, now I can get a refurb with licensed windows cheaper than buying the parts with a trade account

                        A real world example

I did a pano earlier, the file is 16099x2857 px which is 77 Mb on disk as a Tiff file.

Gimp opens it in 5-6 seconds if the programme is already running.

A 7.3 mb 3557x2803 jpg opens in less than 2 seconds

CS3 opened one of my 130Mb film scans in 7 seconds and a OOC jpg faster than I could time.

I guess I don't need to upgrade my 6 year old PowerPC Mac running only 2 gigs of RAM.
It's the image that's important, not the tools used to make it.

Really folks... this thread, though made with the best intent, is just not going to go anywhere except around in circles.

People who love Win and PC's, love Win and PC's. Those who love OSx and Mac, love OSx and Mac.

                            That's the way it is.
