  • The Yaks are Back!

Following my shoot of last year's meet of the Russian Roolettes Aerobatic Team at Wangaratta Aerodrome
I was again fortunate enough to have been given the opportunity to shoot air-to-air in one of these amazing Russian Fighter Trainers.

Doug (65yrs) is a very wry Scot and a highly experienced aerobatics pilot.
Before take-off I asked how close we would be flying to the other airplane as I needed to know which lens to use.
"About 50ft", he said. There were moments when it looked like I could have stood with a foot on the wingtip of each.
The other was being flown by Allen, an A380 Airbus pilot for qantas.

Safety rules require that no loose objects must be taken aboard these airplanes
as if they were to drop there is the possibility of them fouling control cables that pass through the cockpit.
That meant no in-flight lens changes, so the 12-60mm proved to be the right choice for the job.

Realising that vibration and fast moving targets would characterize the shoot
I decided to preset the E-3 to Shutter Priority and let other settings automatically set themselves.
I also set the exposure compensation to -0.7EV to prevent highlight burnouts.

The screenshot shows typical settings of all the aerial shots.

    Wow!!

Brilliant Mark, stunning shots in unusual circumstances, Looks like your plans for settings/lenses worked out fabulously - must have been superb fun.

    Lucky you!

Blimey, did they make you jump out before taking the last shot?!!

If only it was Castlemaine 4x that gave you wings, but guess you had a soft landing!
Great shots, and just wish we had that weather here to enoy.

      Regards

        Fantastic shots!

I particularly like the second one showing the landscape and the proximity of the planes. Very well done....

Superb shots Mark, the stunning colours and detail bring what must have been a thrilling experience all the closer to some one viewing your images.
For me that air to air shots definitely take the biscuit

Not wishing to sound at all critical because they really are superb but I do think the images could be further enhanced with a touch more prop blur.
Dropping the exposure time into the several hundredths of second area by perhaps using ISO100 and a touch less exposure comp would put you in the ball park.
As I said just a suggestion

It was quite a day. Aside from the Yaks there were also hot air balloons and Microlites in the air.

Thanks Janet, I took over 250 shots, some show the city of Wangaratta where I live - maybe I'll post them later.

Thanks for the suggestion, Huw. However, with the canopy open at 150-200 knots to avoid reflections, dropping the shutter speed below 1/1250 down to prop blur speed would most surely have resulted in overall image blur.

Personally, pics of a frozen prop don't bother me, just so long as it doesn't happen in reality.

Prop blur can also be convincingly photoshopped.

                Re: The Yaks are Back!

I should also mention that with the canopy open the force of the airflow off the prop is something horrendous - at one point it ripped my headphones off and almost blew away my beanie.

Phew ! you saved YOUR Beanie then ? what a treat to get up in one of these !
Mark and truly stunning set of shots, clarity and colour are phenominal - what make of camera do you use ?

Did they do lots of upside down and climb & stall ? I seem to recall that here at Popham, in Hampshire the Spitfire Club, members have a few of these because they "fly" like a Spitfire?

As a former pilot - and airshow enthusiast - and keen photograpoher - I must say these are some of the best air-to-air pics I have seen.

                    I know the landscape well.

Thanks Chevvy. They do do aeorobatics but not so much this year as I saw at their last year's Wangaratta fly in.

Not so sure that I would agree that they fly like spitfires, at least not from the pov of an observer on the ground. Spits are much faster of course and have a certain unique grace about the way they fly.

Oh yeah, what sort of camera do I use ... it's a limited edition, custom built E-3 with a monogrammed pearl handgrip.
