I'm looking to acquire either an E510 or E520 body (for the IS) to use with my 14-42 and 40-150 lenses.
Can anybody please advise the main differences and respective advantages/disadvantages of these models ?
The E-520 has a slightly improved sensor (lower noise and higher dynamic range) and it has a fully-developed live view mode that includes imager AF when used with imager-AF optimised lenses. The E-520 also gets remote control functionality for RC FL flash units.
The LCD screen is slightly larger but the same resolution.
From what I read what Ian says is correct there were many improvements in the 520, there are also a lot of forum threads suggesting that the E510 has a lighter anti aliasing filter in it and as such tends to give sharper images. Not sure how much of a difference this makes but I'd google the issue and read the many forum posts before making up your mind. Some people prefer the 520 some the 510. So it's probably not an easy choice.
It is probably the smallest difference but I really didn't like the aesthetics of the E510's mode dials and felt that the dials on the E520 were a vast improvement. The E510 just looks and feels cheaper in that respect.
Ha! Got the E-510, E-520, and an E-3 (another 10 megapixel camera so I thought the comparison would be good) ready, lumbered downstairs with my big Manfrotto 058 tripod with the three cameras and 50mnm f/2 lens only to be greeted with light drizzle! So have lumbered back upstairs to the office and will be waiting for the weather to improve
Nobody has yet mentioned what I'd consider to be the most important difference between the two- jpeg quality and colour. The E510's jpegs have nothing like the sort of beautiful, rich 'Olympus colour' and purity you might expect if you'd had any familiarity with a camera such as the E1. It takes work to get an E510 raw picture looking decent, colour wise. There is just not such brightness and richness. And the jpegs are somewhat dull and uninspiring, and additionally there is a generally harsher look to them.
The E520, on the other hand, whilst it doesn't quite have the same colour and tonality of the E1, is close enough to be very satisfying to use. The jpeg quality is just far better.
Morgoth I have an e-410 and really like the colours, although comparing them to other camera systems has led me to turn the Amber down in global WB.
I've never had an E-1 so cannot comment on how good the colours are from those older CCD-sensor models.
E-520 with 40-150 kit lens...camera set to auto. Jpeg straight from camera.
Dramatic light just before a storm, which I think it captured very nicely.

Straight out of the camera.......did you process it through Oly software or another.It looks brilliant either way.Set to auto...why do we need all those options if it can do this on it's own.
I need to get an I.S. model as well and I am looking at a 2nd hand 520.
E500,E510 now dead,E520 (now retired),E600 and Grip,14-42,14-45,2x40-150,Sigmas 105 and 135-400 Now Dead..ex 25. Manfrotto 190. Plus lots of OM stuff. Now also 4 items from the dark side...........

As for the E510 colours discussed in this thread I've always shot jpeg with mine and set it on vivid. That just seems to give it enough of a saturation boost to get that rich colourful look without going over the top. Overall I find the E510 images great providing you watch the highlights and meter carefully. The newer 520/620 cameras have slightly more DR and do give more saturated images sooc but none I've seen match the sharpness of the 510. So much so I'm considering selling my E620 with all its cool extra features and keeping the E510.
