Where are the sweeteners?

Is it just me thinking that Olympus seem to be a little slow in offering any goodies with the E5? I got free battery offers with my E520 and E620 and I've read of people getting FL50R flash units and HLD-4 grips with their E3s.

Maybe it's because Olympus don't need to promote this one. It's the camera they never wanted to make, the camera they never expected to sell, yet with virtually no marketing effort the E-5 is flying off the shelves like the proverbial hot cakes. It's almost a case of the customer needing to pay a sweetener just to get a quick delivery.

Hopefully the Olympus faithfull's reward for all this will be that the company revises its strategy in the DSLR market in the wake of the unexpected success of the E-5.

Re: Where are the sweeteners?

It would be interesting to know the demand and availability numbers - is it two people wanting something of which there is only one off or is it several 10s of thousands chasing a quantity of several hundred.

Re: Where are the sweeteners?

Seeing as the UK has had no stock for the last 2-3 months, why would they want to offer freebies yet?

Re: Where are the sweeteners?

Going slightly off-topic, is this because they seriously under-estimated demand, or is it because they build in batches and are or were recently concentrating on building something else for a while before returning to building more E-5s? And could the "something else" be a camera they have yet to announce?

Re: Where are the sweeteners?

It seems that stock has returned - SRS emailed me today to say they had stock, but in the 8 weeks or so since I made that enquiry I had found another stockist who had one.

Re: Where are the sweeteners?

Is the no stock situation just a clever marketing ploy by Olympus, establishing a mythology that the E-5 is highly sought after and in such demand that production cannot keep pace? The idea of this approach would be to make the E-5 more desirable by being unobtainable, it's human nature to covert something we can't have. By keeping it reassuringly exclusive and gradually drip feeding supplies to the market Olympus would hope to keep ongoing demand high and avoid the heavy discounting or need for promotional freebies that invariably follow a few months after a new camera has been released. This way they will sell more in the long run and maintain premium price over a longer period of time. What clever accounting!

Re: Where are the sweeteners?

Bringing a Product to Market and keeping Distributors/Dealers happy with margins; add ons and Customers is very diffcult for an OEM - more so today when we pay HALF for a family 4 seat/4 door car than an Escort in 1980 ! They say "Absence makes the heart grow fonder" ! But I feel a realisation of JUST HOW GREAT THE E-5 is WITH the 4/3rds glass has to set in before the "BUY IT NOW" feeling overwhelms one !

Speaking from my experience, I never thought I would buy another camera model ! For me I was happy with the E-1s BUT I Found this website and was STAGGERED at the shots from E-5's - in web load lossy .jpeg's !

With a product like this, Oly should not discount and offer giveaways ! it is sad the number of Dealers who no longer supply Oly !

srs phoned me this morning they had 1 E-5 left !
