  • A small win, but a huge ego boost!

Earlier this year, I took part in a free on-line photography tuition course run by a very small and friendly forum that I'm a member of. As the course progressed, I learned about aperture/shutter speed etc, and finally dared to go out with the camera on fully manual controls...I'd had a few sessions on manual before, with varying degrees of success, but I planned this day specifically to capture one shot. I had to get up at stupid o'clock in the morning to get there, but conditions were just as I expected, and I got the lovely early morning mist I was waiting for...

Last weekend I entered it into the local village show photography section...

And I won first prize and an engraved trophy!

Nothing major in the grand scheme of things, but I'm chuffed to bits!

    Well done Janet!

There's nothing wrong with village show photography sections - I've just won ours!

Lovely picture, full of atmosphere - well worth the early start. (Yours, that is, not mine - I've already made one faux pas this evening and just realized that this is a little ambiguous!)

Well done Janet. It's a good photo, nicely composed and you've caught the misty atmosphere well. I think what makes it work is that the nearest jetty is sharp and we see the others receding into the mist.

Well worth the stupid o'clock start!

          Ciao ... John

Re: A small win, but a huge ego boost!

What course did you do? I have been thinking of doing some sort of course.
It was a short course run over just four weeks on a small internet forum, much smaller than this one, with just under 200 members. Each week we were set a different challenge to help us learn to use manual controls.

Week one - we had to read forum library topics about aperture, shutter speed, ISO and understanding light then take three photographs, any subject, all on manual, just to show that we knew how to change the settings and were familiar with the controls.

Week two - stop action photography - learning how to freeze motion.

                            Week three
                            - blurred action photography - learning how to capture the feeling of movement.

                            Week four
                            - DOF

All of this took place in a private section of the forum, so our errors weren't visible to everyone! We each created our own threads with our submissions each week, which were only viewable by the others on the course, so there was no worry about being made to look like an idiot if we got it wrong! It was restricted to only half a dozen members at a time, so it was a very small and friendly group and we all learned and bounced ideas off each other.

At the end of each weekly assignment when we'd all uploaded our images, the organiser then gave his comments on the images in each thread. There was no marking/judging as such, just comments on where we'd got it right or wrong with helpful suggestions and encouragement. There were no winners or losers.

As a format for learning, it worked very well for me and I'm now much more confident that I at least have a clue how to get good results, even if I don't always manage it!

It is a much smaller site than this, but perhaps this idea could work on here if someone was prepared to step forward and offer their services? I'm sure there are a few of us newbies who would welcome it!
