One from my Back Yard

My wife is the gardener and is very pleased with this Meconopsis, apparently very hard to grow.

Re: One from my Back Yard

I shot about 30-40 images of it over three days to get to this. Its rarity encouraged my persistence....

Unusual flower Peter. Just a query why f6 at 43mm, a wider f-stop or longer focal length would have separated the flower from the background more.

Most interesting Peter, your wife has every reason to be pleased.
I hope you don't mind if I stick a link in here, as these really are a beautiful plant and look as exotic as their common name "Himalayan Poppy" suggests.

This was the 12-50 in Macro mode and f6 is the widest you get.

I did some shots with the E5 and 50-200 at 200/f3.5 which blurs the background more, but this is what I had to hand when the flower finally fully opened.

It was too low for my tripods and I shot this one handed while holding other foliage out of the way with my left hand. Can't do one handed with the E5/50-200.

Meconopsis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I am pleased to have your (knowledgeable) comment. I think it is a Meconopsis or Himalayan Poppy, National flower of Bhutan, but I really did wonder when I saw the Wikipedia picture which shows the stamens (??) in a strong orange coloured circle - mine are not like that.

Peter - I think you can be assured that yours is certainly the Himalayan Poppy.

In cultivation there are many hybrids, and the stamens differ quite a lot.
Yours is possibly Meconopsis x sheldonii. Maybe.
If you google images for them - you will see how they can differ.
