Printing??????

Do you print, what percentage of the pictures you take are printed, what do you do with the prints when printed. If you are printing for sale then the printing is justified.
I am not a camera club joiner so have no need to print for competitive display.

Periodically I feel the urge to buy a printer. Then I go into a period of thought and rationalise myself out of the urge by remembering I can get access tp good online services should I need to get something printed and then I am left wondering what I am going to do with it once I have seen the print, shown a few people the print and then file it away.

I am more likely to create slideshows with the images that I can show on the TV either via a DVD or direct from the laptop.

Re: Printing??????

I print quite a few. Some go on the wall, many get made into letter-cards as my wife is a prolific letter writer. And one or two I sell to private buyers via word of mouth. I don't actively advertise or publish a price list. Some also I bind into thematic books for passing round to captive audiences.

Re: Printing??????

I have both A3 and A4 printers BUT when KAPUT I shall only have a cheap letter printer A4 because I have photos printed 4 x 6 and 7 x 5 for cards and its MUCH cheaper on line printers (I use Cornwall ones - as there are so many impoverished artists down the Camel ... and they print high Quality and reasonable with envelope and slip - I only have to put the card and envelope together and in the "slip" ) and online ; Tesco ; Jessops etc., or whoever is cheapest for 200 in a batch (often 4p each - but then I have to mount them in 3-fold high quality cards and envelopes and a "slips" to prevent mucky hand marks.

The benefits of home printers of any decent quality and the time to print and trim and mount and stuff in envie and "slip" NAH ! I should have thought it through much better before buying, especially the A3 Canon Xi4000 - and as I only use Canon inks I dare not work out the cost per print, nor add time trimming etc.,

Last Year I made up 1,800 cards at home and 2,500 from Printers ... of course only sold a few for very little as I was hoping they would pay for new kit

Re: Printing??????

I produce pictures up to 40x50cm (20"x16") for competitions and exhibitions, along with other sizes for people who ask for them.

Re: Printing??????

The first thing I would say is that you have to have a clear idea of what you're going to use it for.

Unless you are in the "fine art photography" arena then don't expect having your own printer to be cost effective. But let's be honest, if it's your hobby it's all going to be a drain on resources anyway

But, if all I want are some "snaps" of a holiday, for example, I think out-sourcing is a better option; it's cheaper and apart from anything else, life's too short to be churning out hundreds of prints.

I do my own printing of my 'special' images, not very many, which I occasionally exhibit, and if I am lucky, sell. But I don't break even. For me it's the challenge of getting a good print that I enjoy, it's part of my hobby, and for that reason I wouldn't consider out-sourcing. Also, I think it is very difficult to judge exactly how a file will be printed up by a third party, and the ability to run off test prints and tweak the file is, to my mind, essential.

Your needs may vary though.

Ian Rawcoll has pretty much pre-empted what I was going to say. I think his last sentence:

sums up my reasons for having an expensive-to-buy-and-run temperamental printer. For bog-standard holiday snaps or a set from the rugby, I just use a high street lab. We are lucky to have a good one in Salisbury Photo Centre - http://www.salisburyphotocentre.co.uk/ . They also do high quality work but unless it is for something really specialised like a canvas or a huge print, I prefer to do it hands-on and keep control myself.

Ciao ... John

Re: Printing??????

Thanks for all your comments - I shall stay photo-printer-less and rely on online print shops.

Re: Printing??????

We print for comps, and use postcards instead of birthday, christmas cards. I also print for some artist friends.
We bought the epsom 3880 when the photographic shop packed it in and that left BigW or similar to get prints for comps and what came back did not look like what was taken. Plus we live in the country and its a $15 postage back no matter how many you get printed, camera club needs set amount to get a group discount.............so bought a decent printer.
