Not your typical camping holiday was it? The zebra/giraffe shot is very nice.

Re: Camping

Cool.

The most wildlife we come across when camping in the U.K. usually involves mosquitos or noisy kids in the next tent

Obviously a great adventure holiday, Phil. Love all these images, the zebras / giraffe especially.

Thank you Mark, most kind of you to say and fellow zebra/giraffe admirers, thank you very much.

It was a trip of a lifetime. An 8 hour drive, north of Nairobi and 3 hours off road to get to the camping site. My 4x4 took a punishing, then I got caught out by the rapid drop in temp at night and came down with the dreaded man flu and was only able to do one or two game drives out of a possible 14.

There were 26 of us camping out in the tents for a week: family and friends on a private conservancy of 70 square miles. We each paid 100GBP and in return clean water was provided in a 5,000L tank, the bush was cleared for our tents, firewood was provided for the camp fire and 2 toilet long drops were dug out with screens around them. I left a spade there to encourage folks to cover up their poos and pee with the soil, as the long drops quickly became smelly and fly ridden, but not everyone was that interested in complying with my request. It was mostly myself doing it.

We made our own open air shower which overlooked the plains. We had the armed guards, always 3 on site and one came with us on a drive, in case of bandit attacks. We didn't have any problem with that and the guards kept an eye out if we wanted to go for a walk in the bushes or need to go to the long drop in the night - because of the predators. We did our own cooking and washing up. We like that sort of thing seeing the views and the animals. It was special.

Here is another photo of the same group who were grooming and cleaning each other up not far from the side of the road.

.
A very happy new year to you and yours. Thank you Barrie, feel free to use any of my photos or download them. The Zebras and Giraffes are quite sociable and friendly. They did not seem to mind us being close, but we are mindful of them being wild animals and gave them the respect they deserved.

You are indeed correct, thank you. Not the usual holiday in a tent. We try and do it, once a year at Christmas.

Here is a shot of a Giraffe I thought you might like, who was okay about making eye contact (cropped). There were a few little birds on the Giraffe eating the flies.
