You mean "Hoover", which is what my wife calls ours. At various times, we have had various "Hoover" appliances, currently a washing machine and a double oven. The one we have never had, in over 40 years, is a sucking vacuum cleaner!

How as consumers, how much might we be affected post-exit?

Not too much tea or coffee is grown in the EU. All dairy products we regulary consume at totally UK-sourced, apart from some blue cheese – substitute Stilton.

A bottle of wine I bought this morning is from Chile, other recent ones from Argentina, Califiornia, Australia… I am quite keen on trying various Real Ales, all brewed in the UK.

I believe the best bread flour is grown in Canada.

Bacon sausages and black pudding are all sourced in the UK as are red meat, chicken and most fish.

Apart from maybe green beans (Kenya) our vegetables and salads are all grown here.

None of our oil in imported from the EU.

I like to use the syndrome the other way.

Re: Political: We're doomed, Captain Mannering...

A lot of soft fruit is seasonal, and is sourced from different countries according to season. Raspberries for example (my personal favourite) may come from the UK, Spain and the places like Peru in any twelve month period.

Grapes usually seem to come from Spain during the summer but from African or Latin American countries off season. Blueberries seem to come from Poland during the summer and Latin America during the winter.

(These are just my observations at our local Co-op.)

We might just have to become more like the Italians and eat fresh fruit in season or tinned fruit out of season (hence the plethora of Italian tinned tomatoes). It wouldn't be such a bad thing if we reduced our food miles.

Guess I won't be buying an Audi, BMW or Mercedes now though. I'm devastated (not).

Back to vacuum cleaners, when the new energy limit was introduced, out of interest I looked up the specs of Dyson cleaners and was surprised to find they use a lot less energy than most other makes. My Vax is 2KW and happily lifts the carpets off the floor, and it heats the room at the same time!

Should that not be "Hey Siri?"

Anyhow, I don't think Android has the monopoly on updates anymore. My iPad seems to want to update itself on the hour every hour just recently. I don't know if it is just my imagination but it these updates seem to slow it down. Or maybe I am just getting cynical in my old age?

Whilst it does seem illogical I guess these new vacuum cleaner regulations do force manufacturers to focus on efficient design rather than following the cheap and easy route of just fitting more powerful motors.

However, I still don't get the limit on electric kettles. An electric kettle must be close to 100% efficient, and will actually be more efficient if it boils more quickly, so why does it make sense to limit power to (I think) 1.7 KW?

Is this to avoid tripping the grid when we all charge our electric cars?

That might be a problem. I'm told that BMW and Audi SatNavs can only find their way to Coventry on dark, moonlit nights.

Software updates generally mean more machine code to execute, increasing processor loading.
A cynic would say it's planned obsolescence - we users are forced to upgrade the hardware at a certain point.

Well now, Apple tells me that the updates slow it down to protect my battery.

I think they said a s/w throttle had been introduced to stop the device shutting down in cold weather. The public have spoken through social media, and Apple are making it a user selectable option in the next s/w update. (Might have happened already).
It's the sme process with other 'tech', phone tech, camera tech, the lot. All designed to encourage, or force, you into buying the latest.

Fortunately my film cameras don't need updating, the recent batch of 135 film still fits the sprockets.
