Re: Communal flowers, trees, plants and fungi thread
Like Tiny Flowers: Arum Rust Puccinia sessilis
I have seen references which say that this species is rare. We readily found it on the leaves of Arum maculata in local woodland at the weekend and it is present on at least half of the A. maculata growing wild in our garden. The infection is easily recognised when the aecial cups are present. These flower-like cups are similar in various species but are arranged differently. These cups, each about 0.5mm in diameter in this species, contain spores. Due to Arum leaves not being totally flat, I have been unable to get a whole colony sharp. Olympus EM-1, Olympu 4/3 x2TC, Olympus 4/3 50mm f2 macro, Raynox MSN-202 25 diopter, triple TTL RC flash, hand-held with some support. Harold ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Stripes & Squiggles, with Stereo! (Warmed Up)
The previous post was on a warm, sunny day but the petals were not fully expanded. An unseasonally hot day finally got them open. The stereos are crosseye. Harold ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Re: Communal flowers, trees, plants and fungi thread
Stable Recyclers
We recently tipped out some fresh stable manure onto our garden, where it lost much of the excess moisture it had when in a plastic bag. About a week later, some small mushrooms (no more than 5mm across the caps) had grown. The pleated shape of the caps indicates species of the general type "inkcaps". I'm not sure how many species there are, Their appearance sometimes changing considerably during growth. However, the white-stemmed one with grey caps must be different from the brown stemmed ones. The angles I could get were limited, as disturbing the substrate to much would topple the mushrooms. Olympus EM-1 (manual mode), Olympus 4/3 x2TC, Olympus 4/3 50mm f2 macro, triple TTL RC flash. The stereos are crosseye. Harold ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Re: Communal flowers, trees, plants and fungi thread
Strombocactus disciformis in Flower
This is from the arid parts of Mexico, where it is endangered. This is a young plant, about thumbnail size."Strombo" means cone, as in pine cone, a refers to the form of the body. Olympus EM-1, Olympus 4/3 50mm f2 macro, f11, sunlight, hand-held. Harold ![]() ![]() ![]()

Re: Communal flowers, trees, plants and fungi thread
Went to Cambridge University botanical gardens yesterday, had the camera set to spot metering with the intention of getting photos like this...
A bit edited in Lightroom to make it even more dramatic... Would be interested in opinions. I'll post a few more once I've processed them all, it was quite breezy so a difficult day. ![]()

I like the poppy. It is a lovely colour and dramatic light. But I worry about the lower petal which is folded somehow. It bugs me - just enough to try another flower. With my need for glasses getting worse, I find I often notice issues later. But getting a 'perfect' flower with all petals, no browning, no bugs often takes many reshoots. I was wondering about trying to shoot via the ipad app. But it all gets in the way of spontaneous shooting and not needing the tripod...so I stick to reshooting lots. Look forward to the rest |

Re: Communal flowers, trees, plants and fungi thread
Nice presentation. Overcast tends to be better for flower colours than sun but you have to work with what is provided. The DOF is so close to including the whole flower that a half stop smaller might have been worthwhile.
