Hello from Stockport, Cheshire

Hello from a wet Stockport.

I'm an amateur photographer living in Stockport, Cheshire on the look out for a good macro lens 105mm or 150mm f2.8. I currently have a Zuiko 35mm f3.5 but require more reach I am wondering if anybody can help or have one for sale?

Welcome from me too, sorry I don't have those macro lenses either. Although if I had I'm not sure I'd want to sell from their good reputation. Good luck with your search.

Re: Hello from Stockport, Cheshire

Hello and welcome, from a soggy Buxton, just down the road.
There's a couple of 105mm on ebay at the moment, but no 150mm.

Failing that, have you thought about an extension tube on a normal telephoto or zoom lens, maybe the 50-200mm, as they seem to be falling in value.

Re: Hello from Stockport, Cheshire

By way of extension tubes my be my only option, I might get an tele converter at the same time for the 70-300mm.

If you want to try one out, you're most welcome to drop in to see us in Buxton if you're ever over here, extension tube, 1.4x + 2x converters and a 50-200mm.
None of them for sale, but it might help you decide on what to purchase.

What camera are you using them on?

Re: Hello from Stockport, Cheshire

No lenses for sale but I can confirm that the Sigma 105mm is a great macro lens on the 4/3 format. I also have an older manual focus lens, an Elicar 90mm macro, which should be a lot cheaper if you can find one, but still produces excellent results.

Re: Hello from Stockport, Cheshire

Two key questions are whether you are using 4/3 DSLR or micro-4/3 mirrorless camera, and whether you want autofocus or not. You mention 105mm and 150mm f2.8 lenses, which immediately suggests the Sigma 4/3 (DSLR) fit lenses. Obviously, these are designed to work on 4/3 fit DSLRs. They will also AF on a micro-4/3 camera (with the correct adapter) but won’t focus very fast. I have the Sigma 150mm f2.8, and it can hardly be described as fast even on the OMD EM1 Mk1, which will be better than any other m-4/3 camera apart from the new EM1 Mk2.

AF is not always important with macro, so slow AF may not be an issue. But, then you might just as well get an old manual focus lens.

The Zuiko 50mm f3.5 you mention is (I assume) an OM lens. I have that lens and I think it is not the best macro lens (my sample anyway). I prefer my Nikon 55mm f2.8.

I also have an old Tamron Adaptall-2 90mm f2.5 macro lens, model 52B. This is a nice lens and can be easily adapted to either 4/3 or m-4/3

http://www.adaptall-2.com/lenses/52B.html

There is a later version as well, the 52BB.

I am not familiar with other manual focus macro lenses with longer focal lengths. An aperture of f2.8 with a focal length above 100mm is (I think) not going to be that common. But the depth of field at true macro magnification (i.e. greater than or equal to unity magnification) will be tiny so f2.8 would only be used for composing the picture (making the viewfinder bright enough to see what you are doing). This is less relevant with live view on a digital camera.

If the Sigma 150mm f2.8 is a lens you want, I am willing to sell mine. I really don’t use it much since I got rid of my last E3 DSLR. PM me if you are interested. I am in Sale, so just a short trip down the M60 from Stockport.

Mark

Re: Hello from Stockport, Cheshire

Very interested in your Sigma 150mm if its Olympus fit 4/3rds as it is for my E3 the f2.8 is required so I can better find the sweet spot of the lens and also if I get a tele converter in the future.
Funds are tight but please PM me with price
I am unable to post PM message as I have not posted enough?

Re: Hello from Stockport, Cheshire

I have a genuine interest in this lens and happy with costs, I'm frustrated with the PM rules but by now I should have enough posts to be able to PM you. Thanks John Holme
