As photographers, sometimes I think we need to kick ourselves up the backside, or at least step back and really think about the value of what we are doing.
Not sure how important it is that we should have a real significant purpose about our work.

Its just a way of expressing ourselves, a hobby to keep us occupied.

I don't think we should take it too seriously, I personally am not aiming for fame and fortune from my photos, certainly not the latter.

But that's just my take, everyone to their own............

Yes, maybe you are right. It's just that often in the past I've had a purpose or project requiring me to take photos and without that I seem to lack reason or direction. I'm not sure the stuff I'm producing at the moment says what I would want it to say about me.

Re: What does your photography say about you?

Mine would probably say "generally competent, limited artistic vision"

I think we all produce better work when there is a clear objective, whether that be a commission or a self-negotiated project.

Like Shenstone, I too feel that I lack artistic vision, especially when faced with a metaphorical blank canvas.

I find much greater vision and inspiration when in the company of another photographer, and I know they often feel the same way.

Re: What does your photography say about you?

The title of the thread 'What does your photography say about you' is not to imply you have total conscious control, in my opinion. What we take and how we capture has a lot to do with one's personality, upbringing, prejudices, likes, dislikes, the inner feelings under the control of the sub conscious. Not much you can do about it without remapping the brain. I suppose you could force yourself by looking at the photographic output of the great photographers of the past or present and copy their style and visual language, but it won't be you.

It's always a good idea to have a plan before you go out photographing, and not simply take random shots. Have a project or more than one and look for scenes that fall within the scope.
