Hello all!

Hi everyone,

Just stopping by to introduce myself.

I am a noob to photography, but have experience with a point and shoot which inspired me to take the plunge and have just won my first DSLR on ebay.

I've spent months talking with friends and spending ages on cameradecision I reached a decision on a used Olympus E510.. I don't know if I've made the 'right' decision, but spec wise, I was constantly weighing up the many pros and cons, size, spec, weight, etc., so I'm happy to have reached a decision and can't wait to get out shooting. Budget was a major deciding factor and I felt for the money the E510 measured up pretty well and since I'm a beginner, this looked like a great starter.

Anyway, I dare say I'll have loads of Q's.

Happy Easter.

Re: Hello all!

Hi Pupkin.

A warm welcome to this friendly group.

The members here have a wealth of accumulated knowledge and experience of all things Olympus and photography in general. Ask away and I'm sure you will get all the help you need.

I owned an E-510 (some while ago ) and I'm sure you will get on fine with it.

Regards.

Re: Hello all!

Welcome Pupkin. I started my Olympus photography with an E510 and loved it so much I still have it. Not that it gets much use nowadays but I do still like to give it a whirl now and again. It's a really sharp performer and I'm sure you will get some great use out of it. Key thing to watch are the highlights in contrasty scenes as it does tend to blow them out quite easily. I used to dial in -0.3 exposure comp pretty much as a rule and often used -0.7. I got so much into that habit I still tend to do it now on my OMDs. I look forward to seeing your posted images.

Re: Hello all!

Thanks guys, phew I'm glad the 510 isn't a duffer then, apparently the bulb has blown on the internal flash, is this a big problem? I haven't dared explore a replacement part yet. I've loads of Q's about wifi cards, but am off to post in the correct place!

Re: Hello all!

Certainly no duffer Pupkin. You might be better off just using an external flash in the hotshoe if the repair is costly compared with what you paid for the camera.

Re: Hello all!

Hi Pupkin, you've stumbled upon a well-kept secret; in the right hands the E-510 is capable of producing stunning picture quality. Even for beginners or those who just want to take pictures without having to get too involved with the technical stuff it's a remarkably forgiving camera and I never fail to be impressed with the JPEGs that my wife takes on hers. Of course, it's fully specified for more advanced users too and in my opinion it is a real second hand bargain. I hope you enjoy using it.
