Broken

Just a shot of a broken lamp but it typifies the degree of dereliction I found in tourist areas of Corfu.

But is it better in colour or grainy mono?

Any suggestions for other treatments?

E-M5 plus Leica 14-150mm

Thanks

David

Re: Broken

I'm sitting on the fence for this one, I like them both. Great subject!

Re: Broken

I like the monochrome better. I think the colour one would work better with a little less exposure and a little more contrast.

Re: Broken

All you gain in the colour shot really is a blue sky. The mono conversion allows you to concentrate on the subject.

Re: Broken

Definitely mono - not sure if the grain is strictly necessary though?

Re: Broken

Absolutely colour for me David.
The perfection of that clear blue sky contrasting with the imperfections of the broken lamp, and you lose those lovely blemishes of colour in the lamp support in the mono.

Re: Broken

I like both versions David.

I ran the colour version thru levels in photoshop, the histogram indicated that the image could benefit from a greater dynamic range. I then ran it thru topaz, correcting the exposure further, increased the detail and flung in a few extras and was very happy with what could be achieved.

Very nice

Greg

Re: Broken

I prefer the colour version, the B&W - unusually - doesn't hit the spot for me. I don't think the grain adds anything and without it the picture would be a bit flat. I think the colour version works because it is almost monochrome, but not quite. As Lyn says, the subtle changes in colouring are very effective.

Ciao ... John

Re: Broken

I would go for B&W with contrast maybe lose the grain.

Re: Broken

Thank you all for your constructive comments which have given me a lot to think about. Personally I prefer the colour but I will try a lot of your suggestions on both this and the mono to see what I can achieve - for a rainy day.
