OM3 in Campkins, Cambridge

Lovely-looking black OM3 with 50mm f1.8 in the window of Campkins in Kings Parade, Cambridge over the weekend.

£350, although they had a reduction off all s/h stock for the Black Weekend.

Lots of other tasty stuff in there, including Nikkormat, various Pentax, Minolta, Leicaflex and Leica M.

I hate that shop. I went in there a few times when I lived near Cambridge and was always either ignored or treated with contempt.

Re: OM3 in Campkins, Cambridge

It's complicated: there used to be 2 Campkins shops, this one on Kings Parade owned by a member of one branch of the family who was a psychopath (a non-clinical opinion, but based on the same sort of personal experience given by our two colleagues above), and another in Rose Crescent (other side of the Market Square) who couldn't be more charming.

Not surprisingly they had fallen out years ago, and I believe they were completely separate businesses.

I'd had several good experiences with the lot in Rose Crescent (for example, lending me lenses to try out for a couple of days).

Anyway, a few years ago the socially-inadequate pillock died or was otherwise removed, and the decent lot sold the Rose Crescent shop and took over the one on Kings Parade. I haven't been in for 3+ years but as far as I know it now remains OK, although they certainly know how to charge as those s/h prices confirm.

Re: OM3 in Campkins, Cambridge

That's interesting Mark. Seems like things might have improved then. Mind you, the worst experience I've had in a "photography" store was in NYC.

I went in to one of the many "faux" stores on 7th or 8th Avenue. These places sell an odd mix of previous generation "new" gear and cheap Chinese stuff, along with a motley collection of tourist tat. So far, so good, but the prices are rip off - big time. I saw a Panasonic 25mm f1.4 ("Leica") there for $1500, and a Canon 70d with kit lens for over $2k. I was there with a colleague who's a big photography nut too (Nikon gear) and we were browsing somewhat wide eyed at all this. The guy in the shop could see we knew what we were talking about and literally threw is out of the shop. The language was foul and he actially used his hand to push us through the doorway.

I guess Campkins never got that bad.

Re: OM3 in Campkins, Cambridge

There's definitely a new manager/owner there and he's doing his best to dispel the old image.

He's had to deal with a couple of staff of "the old school" and feels he's on the right track with the shop.

I've met him at a few of the Olympus events and he's always doing his best to support Olympus and the shop.

I don't go in enough to give a real feel about how well he's doing though.
