Flickr changes - the end of the free 1TB

Just seen this pop up.

Flickr under their new(ish) ownership are extending benefits to Pro - unlimited storage, new explore etc.

Pro will be $49.99 with a 30% discount for a little while.

https://www.flickr.com/lookingahead/

However the free ride is over for those of us with more than 1000 images on the freebie product.

Quote:
*Free members with more than 1,000 photos or videos uploaded to Flickr have until Tuesday, January 8, 2019, to upgrade to Pro or download content over the limit. After January 8, 2019, members over the limit will no longer be able to upload new photos to Flickr. After February 5, 2019, free accounts that contain over 1,000 photos or videos will have content actively deleted -- starting from oldest to newest date uploaded -- to meet the new limit.

More explanation about the Free changes

https://blog.flickr.net/en/2018/11/0...s-1000-photos/

Not sure what I'll do - £27 for the first year isn't a lot.

£38.61 for year two is OK but they're both a lot more than I'm not paying now
I use Flickr for sharing on here and a couple of other forums but I don't make any money from my photography and I don't get a lot of exciting comments, favourites or other pats on the back from all the uploading, tagging and sharing. Perhaps I'll just let the first 700 images in my collection get culled?

It was only a matter of time. Let's hope the new revenue will lead to improvements.

A thousand images is quite a large number and could be an incentive to maximise quality over quantity.

Flickr is "This is the world’s largest photographer-focused community."

Fire the PR

Instagram is much, much bigger.

Re: Flickr changes - the end of the free 1TB

This could easily turn into a firestorm for Flickr in the same way that it did for Photobucket some years back when they stopped allowing image linking from free accounts. That policy wrecked lots of very useful content on a huge number of forums - anything from car mechanics to hairdressing! The bad press received was almost terminal for them.

Ian - you're making the mistake of (a) reading this stuff, and (b) thinking for more than a micro second what it means.

But Instagram is not photographer-focused at all, more suited to snapshots from phones with digital filters applied
Mind you Flickr has been photographer focused for about 5 years - hopefully it's heading back that way.

Price increased my 2 years subscription use to be only US$44.95. So NOW I have to pay DOUBLE that amount.

Where can I migrate to?

Ian

According to their stats I've been a member since 2009 and have 1785 images - just under 200 images a year doesn't seem excessive to me.
I've always treated Flickr as a kind of photo diary rather than a portfolio. If I wanted to do that I'd have my own site but I have no ambitions to sell anything to anyone.

What's mildly irritating is they say they're cutting the free 1TB because its so expensive, but as I resize for the web I'm only using 0.1% of 1TB

I also contribute to the groups, fav and comment and all the other good community stuff they want to encourage - I'm not just leaching file storage!

I suspect if I did nothing it will simply cull back to 2014 or so which may not really be a big deal.

I can't argue with them asking for money - I've been using it for 9 years for nothing - I'm just not sure it is actually something I'm going to want enough to pay for.

RE: the Photobucket firestorm.

As I'm not paying I can't really moan too much about how SmugMug have decided to change their model. It will definitely break a lot of forum postings but hopefully that 1000 free images will do a lot to mitigate that impact. When PB made their change they simply cut everyone off and asked for money which is a bit less mannered.

On the positive note I can finally abandon the Yahoo! email address I had to set up to register

All a good reason for keeping the forum gallery I say.

Re: Flickr changes - the end of the free 1TB

it's going to hurt a charity/archive project I know of and was slightly involved with

https://www.flickr.com/photos/marygi...project/albums

27k pictures ... some of clear historical significance were put into the public domain

I will look into funding them for a couple of years in the (probably forlorn) hope another free place comes along

regards
Andy

Re: Flickr changes - the end of the free 1TB

I have been on Flickroo for 5 years, and have slightly less than 650. Far too many so I need to get the hedge trimmers out. Don't want to use it for external storage, so I will aim to keep it tight with what I consider my best efforts. Of course my view on what's best changes as I develop. I look back on my early work and think omg. Sometimes I look at my current work and think omg.

Re: Flickr changes - the end of the free 1TB

I have gone Pro. Personally I like to keep all my better photos in one place, with easy accessibility almost everywhere and whatever device I have to hand.

The cost is not enormous, and as yet I don't have to penny pinch. Comparatively, the cost is quite small when I consider my other photo costs...

But everyone to their own...…………..
