Tempted by the Olympus 12-100mm

I have been tempted by the new Olympus 12-100mm f4 IS PRO lens ever since it came out but so far have been out off by the 1K price tag. My idea is to sell my Olympus 12-50mm f3.5-6.3 kit lens and Panasonic 35-100mm f4-5.6 and spend some extra cash to get the new lens. At present I am using both those lenses with the OMD EM5II and they work well, but I am rather disappointed by the dubious build quality of the Panasonic lens and the slowness of the Olympus at the tele-end focal lengths.

Price tag apart, the other consideration is the 12-100's portability (or lack of it, depending on the way you look at it). The other two lenses are very portable and the lightweight Panasonic 35-100 in particular is a very useful range at vintage car shows, cityscapes etc. At over 500 grams the 12-100mm is certainly heavy but then I also use the Olympus 7-14 f2.8 PRO and Panasonic 100-300mm f4-5.6 with the same camera and they are around the same weight.

I have decided to see if there is going to be a post X-mas price drop and then rethink my position.

I would get it - just one lens and you would have it on the camera most of the time. This is a cropped result from this lens on an E-M1 ii, 100mm @f/4:

Re: Tempted by the Olympus 12-100mm

The 12-100 is a chunky beast for sure. Olympus are running drop-in days all over the place at the moment, primarily to flog the E-M1 Mark II, but I imagine they will have the 12-100 to tempt innocent punters as well. I can't remember where the schedule is, but there is one at Salisbury branch of London Camera Exchange on 30th. Nov. Not toooooo far from you, and you wouldn't have to leave The Shire You could ring in the morning and see if they have the lens to try out.

Re: Tempted by the Olympus 12-100mm

How much can I expect for the Olympus 12-50mm (unboxed but with hood and filter) and Panasonic 35-100mm f4-5.6 (Boxed)? Both are in mint condition.

I got 371 from the family as gifts for my recent birthday and so can combine that with proceeds of the 2 lens sales, add a bit more and maybe afford the 12-100mm.

Re: Tempted by the Olympus 12-100mm

Having sold my 12-40 and having a tax rebate a couple of months ago(don't usually get good news in HMRC brown envelopes) I pre-ordered one of these a couple of weeks ago.
I think it should be great as a one lens solution for travelling.

Back using my stella 12-60 at the mo, glad I kept it.

I've had my practically unused 12-50 up for sale for a few weeks now at 105.00 inc RMSD, and it's not attracting much interest, so I'll probably decide to keep it.

In that case, I might be better off trying for a part-exchange with Great Western Cameras. I have been their good customer for years, and they usually do me a good deal.

But I'm going to wait till after X-mas, by which time the 12-100mm might be down to about 850.

Here is the schedule for the Oly try-out days:

http://www.olympus-imagespace.co.uk/...s-demo-days-2/

Salisbury on the 30th. looks like the closest option for you. Apparently the Oly rep will be Jez Sugars, who the LCE folks say knows his stuff.

Wishful thinking I rather suspect - unless you meant Xmas 2017

The Pro range lens prices tend not to fall too much over time - though you might strike lucky with a temporary cashback promo. Good luck.

Re: Tempted by the Olympus 12-100mm

I've just had the call from SRS, they have my 12-100 in stock. Picking it up tomorrow.
Don't know how many they have though.

Sunny day forcast for Friday so I know what I'll be doing.

I will be really interested in your feedback about this lens Andy, especially a comparison to the 12-40 and 12-60. I have the 12-40 now and rate it higher than the 12-60, but that was on a different body (E-5); I am not sure I can part with the 12-40!
However I have a quandary, the 12-100 would be the perfect companion to my 100-400 and I could sell the 12-40 and 40-150. Or do I get myself the Panasonic 35-100 2.8 instead?
Decisions decisions

Re: Tempted by the Olympus 12-100mm

OK, here is an alternative consideration to the Olympus 12-100mm f4 PRO (as a exchange to my Olympus 12-50mm and Panasonic 35-100mm f4-5.6)

How about the Olympus 14-150mm f4-5.6 II instead? It costs less than half of 12-100mm (sub-500 in the High Street), weighs about half as much and is also weather sealed. The lighter design and 14-150mm make it an even more practical "on camera" lens than the 12-100mm and frankly I would not miss that 12-14mm width much (I have the Olympus 7-14mm PRO anyhow). The optical performance reviews seem good.

Out of curiosity though, what is the max aperture available for the 14-150mm at 50mm and 100mm respectively? I am guessing between f4.5 and f5, which makes it only slightly slower than the 12-100mm f4.

Re: Tempted by the Olympus 12-100mm

I had the Mk1 version of this lens, while it's great as a walk around lens with reasonable results it's not up to the standards of the higher grade lenses.
I had to use it at f6.3 or f7.1 to get the best results so reasonable light required or higher ISO.
Suffers from a lot of CA but this is easily removed in PP.

Reportedly, the ZERO coating and other improvements in the Mark II version have sorted the CA issue and the image quality is supposed to be better. Even so, it probably would not be as good as the 12-100 PRO, but as long as it is a good "tourist" lens, I am happy.

That is the present problem with me. I do not have a good weather sealed "all round" lens to use with the weather sealed EM5 II. I like my old 12-50mm very much but the 50mm max focal length is not sufficiently practical. I have never been happy with the Panasonic 35-100mm f4-5.6mm because of its flimsy build quality. The quality of plastic used by Panasonic for their lightweight lenses is significantly inferior to that used by Olympus nowadays For example, I have the Olympus lenses 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 and 40-150mm f4-.56 that I use with the Pen F. Even though none of that kit is weather sealed, those lightweight Olympus lenses are good quality despite the plastic mounts. The Panasonic 35-100mm on the other hand feels cheap and tacky in the hand.

I hope to get either the Olympus 12-100mm f4 or the Olympus 14-150mm f4-5.6 to use as my only "all round" weather sealed lens to use with the EM5II on holidays and such. The latter is lighter, cheaper and has a longer tele end. If it gives "very good" holiday pictures, I'd be happy.

Re: Tempted by the Olympus 12-100mm

I've just traded in my Oly 12-40 Pro and my Oly 14-150 Mk2 to get the new Oly 12-100 Pro. (Which arrives tomorrow from SRS)

I got the 14-150 a year ago to use as a travel lens, it hardly got any use, I was just not totally happy with the results .... don't know why but I suspect that I was used to Pro lens the 12-40 on my OMD-EM1 and the 12-60 on my E3.
