Pen F shutter release sound

I have been playing around with the Pen F and think it is every bit as good as the reviews and reports made it out to be. But if there is one thing that I don't like about it, it is the sound that the shutter release makes. It is rather loud and clacky, unlike the quieter and smoother one from the EM5 II.

I tried using the option for muting the shutter sound but for some reason, the clip-on flash does not work in that mode.

Re: Pen F shutter release sound

Have you selected silent mode or whatever they call it. On my GM5 as an example if you select silent mode everything that gives your presence away is disabled, shutter is set to electronic, focus assist lamp is disabled - I've not tried the flash because I don't use such things. Just a thought.

The "Silent Shutter" mode does not mute the shutter sound, it replaces the mechanical shutter with an "electronic shutter" function. An "electronic shutter" works by progressively reading out the sensor data whilst it is still exposed to light and cannot be used with flash which would produce uneven exposure. There are also problems with movement of subject and camera shake with long lenses (the "rolling shutter" or "jello" effect). This is why, with current sensor/electronic shutter technology the mechanical shutter cannot be replaced by an electronic shutter. However the silent function as an option can still be useful in some situations.

This article, although it relates to Panasonic will give you more information.

Re: Pen F shutter release sound

The E-M5 MkII has one of the nicest sounding shutters I've ever heard, so refined.
I wonder why they didn't use the same technology in the Pen-F?

Maybe they did. I wonder if the refined shutter sound that the EM5 Mk II makes is due to muffling caused by the weather sealing? Just a thought.

I haven't heard a Pen-F shutter so can't make auditory comparison but I doubt very much that a few weather seals make any difference IMHO.
However I would have thought that the mounting structure could make a difference to how the sound is transmitted, maybe that is different if they have in fact used the same shutter assembly.
Or perhaps Olympus marketing just wanted a different sound??

That is also possible. Could it be deliberately manufactured to make a shutter noise similar to the original Pen-F from 1963? I have never seen one of those in the flesh (only pictures) and so have no idea what kind of sound its shutter emits.

I was just thinking how much I like the sound of the PEN-F shutter. Each to their own!

Re: Pen F shutter release sound

The EM1 and the EM5ii have vastly different shutter sounds, the EM1 is loud and functional and the EM5ii is subtle and rather nice.

From memory the EM10 is somewhere in between.

Re: Pen F shutter release sound

All this makes me think that Olympus deliberately made the shutter sounds different to suit individual tastes. I also like the subtle sound of the EM5II very much; nit so fond of the louder 'clacky' sound of the Pen-F but paradoxically, am pleased to know that there are those who like it! I now am certain that it was done to add to the camera's retro image.

Re: Pen F shutter release sound

Sensory marketing in action.

EM1 - Loud, proud and reassuringly funtional
EM5ii - discrete and svelt
PenF - Look at me I've bought a fancy old fashioned (and therefore cool) camera

Each sounds like the intended perception of the product position.

Clever of Oly

Re: Pen F shutter release sound

A couple asked me to take a photo' with their Canon DSLR (I think it was a consumer model). The shutter sound was so loud and 'clacky' that it made me jump and I looked at it after to see if something had broken!
