Re: Windows 10 Codec for ORf

There is a thread in the EM1 mk2 about being able to view .orf's in Windows.

Sorry I can't work out how to direct you to that thread.

However, the link to fastpictureviewer is to a programme that allows Windows picture viewer to display the photos. (Thus codec exists and Windows won't adopt/buy it!!)

The programme is free for 14 days I think, then needs 10 or so to have it permanently.

http://www.fastpictureviewer.com/codecs/

Works well for me with the Em1 mk2............

Good luck...

Well this is baffling.
Just tried installing this codec on a Win 10 PC;
It doesn't work at all for my Stylus1s .orf files
For my EM-1, it seems to work sometimes, but not always
For my EM-5, again, it seems to work sometimes, but not always

I can't spot any particular similarities/differences with the previews that work and those that don't.
Sometimes I have downloaded photos by plugging a cable into the camera, and sometimes by plugging the card into a USB reader, but I can't immediately see why that would make any difference.

At first, I thought it might be due to me having two different EM-1 bodies, but it seems not;

Here's an example screenshot from Windows Explorer (10) of consecutive files shot in a quick burst;
(It's not immediately related to alternate shots either, this was just an easy example to capture a screenshot)

Re: Windows 10 Codec for ORf

All raw files contain an embedded JPEG. The old (2009) Olympus codec should be able to display these JPEG embedded images from any ORF file. I know that it works fine on Win 7, but you'll have to suck it and see on Win 10.

Re: Windows 10 Codec for ORf

Don't waste your time with outdated Olympus or Microsoft codecs - I thoroughly recommend the Fast Picture Viewer codec pack which MJ224 suggested - it is cheap, it works really well with any raw file and it is regularly updated - I am using it with the latest version of Windows 10 with no problems at all.

Re: Windows 10 Codec for ORf

I thought I would email Olympus from their website.

Transcript of my original question

Type of request: Support
Model: OM-D E-M5 mk ii
Message: Hi, now that Microsoft no longer produce codecs for raw files, will Olympus be producing any so that the .orf files from the E-M5 ii and the E-M1 ii can be previewed through the Windows Explorer? I see that Canon now produce their own codecs.

Their reply to my question:

Dear Mr ... [deleted, and they spelt my name wrong]

Thank you for contacting Olympus regarding the codecs for RAW files.

We at Olympus have created and made available the codecs for all our RAW formats, it is up to the various companies to decide what to do with them.

We offer the Olympus Viewer 3 software to allow you to view and edit all your photos, Raw and JPEG.

Please use the following link to download the Olympus Viewer 3 software:

http://ov3-support.olympus-imaging.com/ov3download/

Please feel free to contact me with any questions regarding the software or any Olympus products, I am happy to help.

Have a great day.

Kind regards,

Chris Johnloz
UK customer and technical support

My reply to Olympus:

Dear Chris,

Supplying the codecs to Microsoft and not to your customers is no good to us, your customers, because Windows are not sharing them with us.

I already have Olympus Viewer and I can view the images there, as I can with Lightroom, On1 Photo Raw, and a host of other raw processors. But, they do not help me to just see the thumbnails that are sitting on, say, my desktop when using the Windows Explorer without having to open one of those programmes first. I do sometimes just want to access the files through the browser, especially when I am running training sessions.

Canon make their codecs available to their customers as a plugin for Windows.

http://www.canon.co.uk/support/consu...bit)&language=

As do Nikon:
http://downloadcenter.nikonimglib.co...oad/sw/97.html

Please would you issue your codecs to your customers.

Thanks,

Ivor

I am eagerly awaiting a response.

It's interesting that they supply 'various companies' with the codecs. I take that to include Microsoft. I'll email them next!

Re: Windows 10 Codec for ORf

My laptop has a fresh install of Windows 10 Creators Edition on it and I can view ORFs in Windows Explorer no problem.

That's really interesting. I use the Home Edition. I wasn't even aware of the Creators Edition. I'll go look!

Thanks again, Ian,

Re: Windows 10 Codec for ORf

Interesting, thanks.
I installed the fastimage viewer codecs ages ago: I see I'm still running what's called win 10 'Home'.
Is there any way to trigger a 'Creative' update at some convenient time for me, or will it start nagging me about it in the usual irritating manner when I need to be doing something else uninterrupted for a week?

Yes, I did a clean install with the Creators edition last month.

My main point was that it was a clean install and so I hadn't installed any codecs and I can see ORF thumbnails and view the images in the Windows photo viewer.

Great, thanks. I hadn't picked up on your link.

Yes, I'm on 1703.

Doesn't make me feel any more creative, I must say

Re: Windows 10 Codec for ORf

One way of know you have it installed is the existenced of a 3D version of Paint

It's not really an 'edition' - so you will stay as 'Home edition' but the Creators update is more of a major update than a routine one. I think there is another scheduled feature update scheduled before the end of the year.

Re: Windows 10 Codec for ORf

Just type co on the search bar and the control panel icon appears and I click on it. In fact just 'c' will do it

I think we are referring to the same thing; the search bar next to the windows start icon?
