Compact flash card reformat - help needed

Hi all, I'm afraid the boredom of a rainy Sunday afternoon has taken it's toll, I decided to erase my Sandisk 8GB Compact flash memory card (seemed like a good idea at the time, bit of a early spring clean thingy). It erased ok but I can't find a way to set it up to use in my camera (When inserted and turned on it shows as 'CF Error'). I had hoped it would just 'update' when turned on but that would be too easy ehh? My back-up card is a 128Mb XD card so using RAW I have 7 shots . . . Ooo, hold on, my cat is playing with her ball . . . . . make that 6 shots left, any pointers would be appreciated but let me know gently if the best thing to do is to 'learn something the hard way', creak open my wallet and buy a new one

Re: Compact flash card reformat - help needed

Did you format it on your PC or in the Camera? If on the PC what format did you use? - needs to be FAT32.

Have you tried taking the xD card out and re-formatting the CF card in the Camera?

Dave

Re: Compact flash card reformat - help needed

Hi Dave, Thanks for the quick reply, I linked my camera to my mac (USB) and used the macs Disk Utility program, it shows up as a drive on my mac (my CF card was the only card in-camera), it has options in the erase menu for Name, Format and Scheme, I set the format to the eXFAT option (google and Youtube advised it ) and Scheme to GUID Partition Map (I have no idea what 'Scheme' is or does btw) I'm trying the other Scheme options now, (Master Boot Record and Apple Partition Map). I'll try your advice for the FAT32 format too, thanks again for a quick reply

Re: Compact flash card reformat - help needed

The recommended way is always format the card in the Camera.

I suspect it does not like thee GUID partition setting.

Re: Compact flash card reformat - help needed

The manual for the E-520 (and all Olympus cameras) says, "Non-Olympus cards or cards formatted on a computer must be formatted with the camera before they can be used". For the E-520 manual page 118 refers.

Personally I always re-format (in the camera) rather than just deleting images from the card after I have downloaded them to the PC, ( for me after every day's shooting.) Deleting items from memory usually just deletes the registry entry for the item rather than deleting all the data. This can sometimes cause corruption of new data being written over the old in the future.

Regards.

Thanks for the posts chaps, I've tried various things but still no joy, looks like I'll be buying a new card tomorrow. (I bet its tonight that Elvis and Lord Lucan pops round for cuppa and I won't have a camera to prove it!)

Re: Compact flash card reformat - help needed

If re-formatting in camera as per page 118 did not work have you accidentally moved the card "write protect" switch to "Lock"?

Regards.

Thanks Peter, all working after I finally found my manual and reformatted the card in-camera. ...phew, close one! I'll remember your advice about deleting images by re-formatting in camera in the future, ...after I've imported them of course

I don't believe CF cards have a "write protect" switch though.

It's so long since I used CF cards I'd forgotten that.

I know it's terrible that I only have one card, I've never worried about filling it up as 8Gb gives me around 460 RAW images, which is more than enough for a pre-digital old duffer like me I see now that I need a backup card to cover 'technical' malfunctions, ...ahem...even though my problem was 'human error'. Rest assured Derek, the human in question has learn a valuable lesson

Hi Chris -

If you wish to send me a private message with your address, Anne and I will send you a new 4GB CF card which we don't have any use for now.

Regards. Barr1e
