Some Canada Geese feel quite pleased with themselves at the moment (Lordy noise all night from these)...

Re: Communal Bird Photography Thread

Male Chaffinch from a local wooden patch. I'm inclined to believe that my 4/3 lenses tend to backfocus and need 2 or 3 steps AF calibration.

Re: Communal Bird Photography Thread

That's nice Tord. I haven't seen a Chaffinch in our garden for years but over the past couple of weeks we have had up to five of them present for most of the time. We also had two Siskins visiting this week for the first time ever.

Re. your comment about your 4/3 lenses, was this taken with your 300mm f2.8? I can't read the exif data.

Re: Communal Bird Photography Thread

Hi Ron

That's with the 300mm f/2.8. We have a few Chaffinch around this winter. Sweden"s second most numerous bird, averaged over 4 seasons. Most are migrants, will be back in May.

Madam Secretary I took this photo over Christmas out in the bush, in Laikipia during the drought.

Re: Communal Bird Photography Thread

Hadada Ibis Thank you for looking. Yesterday whilst walking in the forest, I came across this young Ibis high up on a branch in the trees. I have not edited the photo or cropped it. I did try to enhance the colours and the sheen, but it came out with a purple tinge, so I left it. I could have taken it out in Lightroom 4, but decided to leave everything in looking natural. More details and clarity to the feathers would have been nice, but it wasn't to be.

The forest floor was dark and with the sunbeams shining through the trees, made the light behind the Ibis look bright and surreal.

Re: Communal Bird Photography Thread

A goldfinch that had struck our kitchen window...

Knocked itself right out and it looked like it wasn't going to come around, never mind recover enough to fly away...

So moved it away from danger left it some food and water, and each time I checked on it - it looked to have recovered a little more...

This was taken shortly before it flew, and it was taking full notice of what was going on around it,....

If ever there was a bird designed by a committee it must be the Secretary Bird. Some years ago I got a shot of one in Umfolozi where it was eating a small snake.
