You must live a miserable life Jim.

Think how much better our lives would be if we all lived in identical concrete tower blocks of the type favoured by the Soviets, with obligatory photographs of our political leaders on the wall!

I don't want a lot more money, just a little more. Enough to cover some pressing repairs to the house, replace some worn out furniture and still have enough in the bank to eventually replace our aging car with one about 3 years old would be nice. But given the choice I'd rather have my old life back - ideally to how things were in my 30's (my golden years).

WELL DONE....????

Don't take much 'Do-in' if my memory serves.

Let em try bringing up two kids on below minimum wage.
Then, and ONLY then, they may get a WELL DONE from me.

Silly comments - with just an edge of acrimony!

What I do say is that I find the sycophantic fawning over the Royal Family grotesque beyond words, when there is such inequality in our society - more so than in Victorian times.

As individuals I bear the 'royals' no ill will - how can I, I don't know them. I only 'see' them through layers of PR and media representation. What I don't like is the institution, which is deeply unjust and undemocratic.

'It's a girl' it says, well a one in two chance unless the dice is loaded. Obviously not!

As long as the privelidged earn their keep, that's all I have to say on the matter.

Re: Its a girl :) well done Kate & Wills

I have obviously come to the wrong place then.

This thread started off celebrating the birth of a healthy baby girl, which in my book is a cause for celebration irrespective of who the parents are and where they live. Every time a child is born there is a new hope for the world.

None of us gets to chose our parents, and few of us have much say in which schools we attend. I might have been lucky in that respect, as having a good treble voice I was sent off to choir school; which at the age of eight was my own choice.

I thoroughly enjoyed being a chorister, and even knowing what I know now I wouldn't have changed anything; but throughout my adult life I seem to have suffered sneering resentment and hostility from people who don't know me, but just presume I must have an easy life. I don't! But why are some people so bitter and resentful of those who's lives they know nothing about?

From what I can see the 'Royals' don't have much say in how they lead their lives. Even if they were to abdicate en masse they would still need 24 hour police protection for the rest of their lives, and would no doubt be relentlessly perused by the media.

Whilst I enjoy the pomp and ceremony I don't have a great interest in the Royals, and I certainly don't follow their every move; but I do find it rather sad that [what should be] a joyous occasion seems to bring out so much resentment.

Gents, why all the acrimony? I probably have no right to say this as I'm no longer a mod, but the birth of a child is special to the parents, as it would be if it happened to any of us. So let's celebrate the birth, wish the baby well, and leave it at that.

Exactly! The birth of a child is special to the parents, friends and relations - but not to The World and His Brother!

The Huffington Post got it right: "Woman gives birth to second child etc." That's about the size of the news.

Jim, I am very pleased for Kate & Wills albeit I am a mere commoner, not their parent ; friend or relation !

Just happy for them and I thought I would share the "Princess News" and joy here.

Sorry if I offended you by starting this thread !

You didn't offend me in the least. It gave me an opportunity to voice my opinion (FWIW) on the subject!

I don't take offence easily. I worked in a large factory for 35 years and developed a thick skin!

You have every right to say it, Stephen, opinions aren't limited to mods!

My opinion FWIW is that an occasion such as this can bring much joy to some people and at least raise a smile (in these dour times) from most. Even if you disagree with Britain being a monarchy, the celebration of a royal birth does you no harm. It's not like the current political debate surrounding the looming election, the result of which is likely to have a very profound and material effect upon our lives. So, although we enjoy free speech and everyone has the right to an opinion, is it really necessary to make a thread like this a contentious issue when we already have current threads providing ample opportunities to express our political leanings?
