Fish ID needed please

Walking the Grand Union Canal yesterday, most of which was frozen over - I spotted under a bridge which was free of ice a fish which stood out in the sunshine. Fortunately traffic was not moving hence the clear water.
It was pretty large and was quite happy swimming with some others which I term as the usual ones.

Can anyone identify please as my knowledge on fish is poor.

Re: Fish ID needed please

Barrie I think its either a Carp or Bream actually, more like a Carp because of the long dorsel fin on top and I recall my dad (into fishing freshwater) a Golden Carp breed and this sure looks Golden beautiful fish

Re: Fish ID needed please

Chevvy, Jim and Wee man -

Thanks for the ID.

Something new to write about in the diary.

I also took a number of pictures of a mink on the frozen canal having lunch. I posted a few on our sister site:
http://www.fourthirds-user.com/forum...ad.php?t=10507

If you visit I hope you enjoy them.

Thanks again.

Re: Fish ID needed please

As an angler, I'd say that fish isn't an exotic such as a Koi carp. It looks like a common carp to me, and one that I would have loved to have landed...!

It's a fine specimen to find in a canal.

Although they are known as "common carp", they are anything but common, and certainly not at that sort of size in a canal.

They are fully scaled, unlike leather or mirror carp, and have a natural golden hue.

Janet

Not a common, they are almost invisible from above, it's definitely one that's been released. Looks like a ghost carp to me.

Re: Fish ID needed please

it's a ghost koi - a low grade koi, almost a throwback to the wild variety of common carp.

There are 3 common carp in the second picture too

Thanks so much. Low grade? I don't like taking low grade.
