Affinity Photo

If anyone is interested, Serif Affinity Photo for Windows, Beta version (64 bit only), can be downloaded free from:

https://affinity.serif.com/en-gb/photo/windows/

This program has apparently had good reviews for the Mac version.

Re: Affinity Photo

It's also on offer full prod version for 29.99 up to the 24th Nov.
I was going to give it a try but just found out it needs 64 bit windows and I don't have that

If you are running Windows, why not 64-bit?

Re: Affinity Photo

I've been a user of Serif's PagePlus DTP software since version 1.0, goodness knows how long ago but it was on Windows 2.0! If Affinity is as full featured and reliable as PagePlus it would be well worth looking at, especially at the price. (I have no connection with Serif, I'm just a happy customer.)

Re: Affinity Photo

Just downloaded it and tried it on a W8 laptop. Took 2-3 min to open an ORF file

So I tried it on my i7 desktop, it was quicker, but once I started playing with the tone mapping (often a slow process) the sluggish performance was very noticeable.

But it's a Beta version, converted from Mac so there will be issues.

Seems very full of functionality and I liked the lens distortion correction.

I found an old image from a Leica lens that exhibits CA and it handled that quite well.

The "Liquefy" looks like it could be a lot of fun...

Richard - over time I have bought a lot of Serif stuff, but never used it. How do you find it. I am looking for a simple way of cataloguing / ranking my 'vast' collection

Re: Affinity Photo

I've been using Affinity Photo Mac version for a short while and it gets the big thumbs up from me, its extremely fast whatever the image size. Here is an excellent demo fro Serif showing a few of the features, in my opinon if you don't want to go the Adobe CC route this is the goto software for image editing.

Re: Affinity Photo

Luminar just released a few hours ago today by Macphun, another exciting image editing software, lots of unique features and if you are a Macphun user you can get the software for 39.00. I'd suggest downloading a demo of Luminar and Affinity photo and see what suits your editing style. Its a great time for photographers now we're in the digital era. Great stuff for us.

I've only really used PagePlus which is excellent for producing flyers, brochures, handbooks etc. although it has that many features I've barely scratched the surface! I wouldn't have thought it very useful for cataloguing, I guess a database of some sort would be better for that. Personally I've found the effort involved in cataloguing stuff so tedious I've always ended up just thumbing through contact sheets (or their electronic equivalent)!

I have an active computer still running 32 bit Win 7 (which my wife generally uses) but I have had to go to 64 bit Windows a few years ago (in my laptops) if I wanted to run anything worthwhile, like Capture One, in my instance. That (mine & apparently Phil's) older computer I don't think is hardware configured to take 64 bit, as far as I know (Core 2 Duo, I think), so maybe Phil is in that same situation.

Re: Affinity Photo

To answer your question Ian the PC was set up with 32 bit windows 7 when I got it a good few years ago now. I didn't know if there was an option to change to 64 bit or for that matter if the hardware was up to it. As it works ok, if a little slow these days, I've never changed.

Re: Affinity Photo

Just saw your post Ross. Yes you are correct it is a Core 2 Duo CPU running at 3.16GHz. I suspect the hardware isn't up to 64bit. Probably not worth the hassle and expense of tinkering as I guess it will all need replacing at some point. Probably sooner than my wallet would like I guess.

Actually it's more the Ranking function I am interested, as being forced to produce some 'photobooks' for Christmas and it's a good way of making 'short lists.

Re: Affinity Photo

I have downloaded the Windows beta and it looks very interesting. Opens EM-1 ORF files quite nicely. I like the way it does layers. This is a serious alternative to PS.
