Re: What is it with Olympus lens prices?

SRS have the 40-150 f2.8 for 999 and the 1.4x converter for 275. Or you can buy them in a bundle for 1399 .......

Re: What is it with Olympus lens prices?

I'd imagine it's to do with the weak pound. Back in May the exchange rate GBP/JPY was around 160, today it's 132. So for Olympus Japan to get the same amount of Yen selling their lens, the GBP price has to go up around 20%.

Or it could be one of those sale techniques of putting prices up for two months in order to put on sale in January with a large discount?

This doesn't explain why the lenses in USA are historically so much cheaper than buying the same lens in the UK.

Re: What is it with Olympus lens prices?

Given the price variation $ to the we always seemed to be paying roughly the same numbers - $100 = 100. Hence the term rip 0ff Britain.

As much as I like Olymus gear I have always thought them to be a wee bit more expensive than other Nippon camera gear which come with 'certain extra's.. Then again, maybe I'm just a born pessimist?

Re: What is it with Olympus lens prices?

I think it has started to happen to other marques as well. It might be worth checking out John Lewis as I have just ordered a lens from them and they do not (yet) seem to have put the price up

I bought a Sony RX10 Mk iii when it first became available in May for 1245. It is now 1549 from Wex and 2008 from Amazon!

Well, the benefits of 'sovereignty' will indeed work through in time ( ;-) ), but in common with reliable assessments of the whole process it's going to take a while yet: for example, see the graph here -

http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/O...1.4x-Converter

That site has a lot of interesting information and is always worth checking before every significant purchase.

Now, Sony has more to answer... http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/S...II-Camera-Body

Re: What is it with Olympus lens prices?

Six months or so then Euro was 70 pence to a euro I got the 40-150 pro and TC for the same in euro as the pounds saving 30% now the Euro is 86 pence to the Euro . But the shops in Dublin are no longer selling with pound prices matching Euro.

Nah, your cliches are out of date, mate!

Seriously, Olympus prices seem to be holding rather better than some other manufacturers. Nikon are broadly up, for example.

Re: What is it with Olympus lens prices?

My advice would be to wait for the Amazon flash sales. Lens prices in January were really a lot cheaper than those quoted here.

yes - i managed to get the 60mm macro lens for 275 and then got the Olympus 75 cashback. So only 200. Second hand ones go for more than that.

Re: What is it with Olympus lens prices?

Yes I missed that one Mark but I did get the 40-150 pro plus x1.4 for quite a bit less than 900 all in with free postage.

Re: What is it with Olympus lens prices?

It's government policy! Destroy interest rates so people spend money instead of saving it, then drive the exchange rate down so imported goods cost more and British goods are much cheaper overseas. The only problem is that we are producing less and less in the UK and rely on imports for everything from clothes to food to high-tech items like lenses and electronics! So inflation will also zoom up!! As I write the 'experts' on TV are forecasting parity of the pound and the euro (so importers can officially just change the dollar or euro sign into a pound sign!
