Old flash on Micro 4/3?

I remember reading that the FL-36R & 50R do not perform reliably with micro 4/3.
I cannot record where I read this and have trawled through this site and it seems not here.
The most I can find is folk quite happy mixing the old (36/50R) and new (600R).
Does anyone know of this, and if so specifically what is the issue? I would appreciate this knowledge before I stuff up a job using the 'old' flashes.

I've not had a problem with my E-M5 MKII or my E-M1.

Re: Old flash on Micro 4/3?

Paul, the only thing that doesn't operate on the flash with the later cameras is the Focus Assist light as it will only use the 'in camera' LED, except when the later model flashes are used with a LED video light (as far as I know), otherwise the FL50(R) & FL36(R) work perfectly fine. Also, they can't be used as a commander for RC use but can be used in RC mode with a suitable commander flash (such as one supplied or 'in camera'.

Re: Old flash on Micro 4/3?

As well as confirming what has been said already, I also use very old Olympus flash guns T-20 s

I like to use all sorts of flash with a radio trigger, but having full control over multiple FL-50Rs really is a good way of working in static situations

Re: Old flash on Micro 4/3?

Although not specific to the OP's query, I also have a 10 year old flashgun that works quite well with my OMD EM5 II. This is the Metz 54 MZ-4i that my wife bought for her Leica V-Lux back in 2006. She does not use it often and so I stole it and changed the bottom adapter from M6 to M7.1 version (an additional 35) which made it compatible with MFT cameras. It gives very good TTL and Auto results and with its GN 54, is quite a bit more powerful than my Olympus FL-600R and Nissin i40. But is is large and awkward and so I use it with a flash bracket and Olympus FL-CB05 cable.

Re: Old flash on Micro 4/3?

I've used the FL50-R on the E-M1 without any issues. Someone on DPReview posed this question for this combination and there is a response from Olympus.

Edit: It was Barr1e, only just spotted that

Re: Old flash on Micro 4/3?

Having just got myself several flashes...

The FL-600R works well atop the camera and also works well as a commander to wireless flashes (except in the instance where you want to switch off the flash mounted on the camera - but that's probably me!)

The FL-36R works very well as a TTL slave and I have two of them that I use either as slaves inside flash umbrellas, or as slaves mounted on a macro rig.

My current favourite method is to use the supplied mini flash commander on top of the camera switched "off" and three slaves (two FL-36R as umbrellas and one FL-600R as a highlight) and sometimes an additional standard slave for wall wash etc, manually set to flash in sync with the TTL guns.

See the list of bits in my signature...

Re: Old flash on Micro 4/3?

For the last couple of years I have been using my EM-1 for macro with:

FLM-2 on the hotshoe, light switched of, preflash sets exposure.

Off camera, 3 (+) units:

FL-50R or FL-36R on L-bracket.

FL-300R, either on short, straight bracket suspended from tripod mount on adapter or held in my lens-supporting hand or,

FL-300Rs each on generic floor-standing mount.

The only problems are:

Low batteries can mean loss of RC (FL-50R in particular).

Pop-up of FLM-2 gets knocked down and no guns fire.

Harold
