OM-D EM5 Voice Recorder?

I have heard that there is a voice recording function on the EM5 that allows you to record a short narrative sound file alongside still shots. This is different to the video recording function.

Canon used to provide a similar function on their PowerShot series cameras at one time (up to the G5 or G7 I think), but they have since dropped this feature in favour of video.

I cannot find anything about it in the manual so I wondered if I was imagining this, or whether anyone tell me more?

Re: OM-D EM5 Voice Recorder?

That is a very often overlooked feature. Adding some description (or sound) at the time (requiring the user to chimp & selecting the audio record option) can be useful but something that is often forgotten or overlooked by many users.
BTW, if viewing the thumbnails in Olympus Viewer 3 you can click on the on the thumbnail to hear the audio, as well as reviewing photos in Playback on the camera to hear it (& in Slide Show, but best to have Slide Show background music off).

Re: OM-D EM5 Voice Recorder?

Where is the audio stored (RAW/JPEG?), is it just another EXIF tag, and what happens if you edit the image in anything other than Olympus Viewer?

It is tagged with both the raw & jpeg but is stored as a separate wave file in a Windows folder.
This a crop from Oly Viewer 3 (thumbnail view) with the showing in the bottom right corner of the thumbnail. Clicking on that plays the audio clip.

And a crop from Windows Explore showing the separate files. Note when the audio is added then the file naming shows the raw file & associated audio clip like it is a duplicate with the added '_01'.

I hope that helps.

Yes, all video capable models should be able to do it (I think all the PENs with video would do it as well with built in microphones as well as the applicable compact cameras). Just press play back of your images in the camera, press OK & it should show a microphone symbol in the list of options.

I often use the video facility to make 'notes' as I go along, but very often a short audio file would be just as useful, and takes up less disk space. An audio file is also easier to trace as it shares its file name with the relevant image.

That & video is what I missed with my first DSLR (E410) coming from a Fuji P&S.
