Firstly, forgive me if I'm being stupid
![]() I'm really struggling to resize photos and upload them to the site using lightroom. (I was going to enter the photo comp.) I've just succeeded in getting a .bmp file below 19.5 kb and now, when I try to upload it I get a message saying "This is not a valid image file". I've tried looking at FAQ - but that hasn't helped ! I'ld be very grateful if someone could indicate a workflow for exporting suitably sized images from Lightroom? Thanks in advance Robert |

Re: Resizing and uploading photos
Hi Graham
Thanks for replying !! I've tried using "Manage Attachments" when replying to the email thread. Strangely there is no mention of jpg file types under "managte attachments". I've just tried attaching a jpg and get the error message "Invaild file". On a more happy note, I have succeeded in uploading the very same file (865kb) to an album under my profile. It's confusing because the stated file size limit is only 97.7 kb So I'm still not sure what the best approach is ! Kind regards Robert |

Re: Resizing and uploading photos
Are you trying to upload them to the Gallery?
Or are you trying to upload them to a thread?

Re: Resizing and uploading photos
Well, I've tried
- attaching them within a post (unsuccessful) - uploading to gallery (successful, except that I managed to duplicate the entry and find I can't delete them) - uploading to a personal album (also successful) I then managed get an image from the gallery into a post, but it displays very small compared to others (see entry in current photochallenge). I'm not sure what the best approach is to upload photos. What works seems to depend on which route you take, as does the max file limits. Also I'm having difficulty finding the combination of pixels and sizes that give files of the right size (kb) but also display OK. So any advice would be appreciated as the FAQ's don't seem to help ! Thanks Robert |

Re: Resizing and uploading photos
There are various ways to show images in threads, including uploading them to a gallery here, or linking out to another site like Flickr.
When I upload direct to gallery I also do it from lightroom - create an export preset for Olympus Forum (File / Export); choose a folder on your hard drive as the intermediate stage in the first settings box, then further down in File settings, you can specify the type of file (Jpeg) and limit the maximum file size by putting a value into the box and checking it. I use 500kb to stay within the gallery limit of around 512Kb. You can also specify an image size - I happen to have 800px long edge, but it can be smaller. Save all this as a preset, then next time you can just Export with Preset, and it's only one click. Your images should then upload from your hard drive with no hassle from the forum. ![]() |

Re: Resizing and uploading photos
Quote:
If you look on the forum home page on the RHS you will see links to two video tutorials which show you how to upload photos to the Gallery and then include them in a post. The use of the "attachment" facility is delberately discouraged by making it only accept small images. The reason the image you managed to include in the competition thread is small is that you have done it as a "Clickable thumb (to gallery)". If when composing your post you use the "My Pics" button in the post window you will see in the window that opens next there is a drop down menu at the top which has "Clickable thumb" as its default. Change this to "Original Image" and you will get the full size image in your post. Regards. ![]()

Re: Resizing and uploading photos
The other way instead of using My Pics is to use the BBCode from the gallery.
![]() BTW, I usually make my photos 900-1000 pixels wide & I resize my images in Olympus Viewer 3 at Medium Quality (& +5 sharpening for web display) even when I've edited the photo in Capture One, because I find it so simple & easy to do.

Re: Resizing and uploading photos
As I understand it you can't attach a picture directly into a post on this forum. You need to upload it to your gallery space first, then add it to your post from there. Just copy and paste the code as Ross indicates above.

Re: Resizing and uploading photos
BMP files are not compressed. So they will be many times bigger in terms of file size (kb) than a Jpeg. I never create BMPs.

Dear any interested reader(!),
Unfortunately I'd missed the video tutorials on the home page. Big mistake ! Naively I simply tried to attach a file (photo) when replying to a thread. That gives file options for .bmp, .png and .gif. Thought it strange that jpg's were not mentioned! I tried a bmp file meeting the specifications (<19.5kB, 620x280 pixels) but that didn't work. I then tried looking at FAQ. FAQ's doesn't mention the gallery route at all! But it does mention using URL's and uploading to albums. Here the max file size is given as 97.7kB and 600x600 pixels, rather than the 512kB limit. Perhaps an administrator could add a reference to the tutorials in the FAQ's? Anyway, thanks for being kind and all your helpful responses. R

Re: Resizing and uploading photos
Other photo forums allow to post an image in a thread either from a web site like Flickr for instance, or direct from my computer, and on one such site, the image does not end up in a gallery, it remains in the post. I do not like the requirement here that an image must already exist somewhere on the web before it can be posted here. I do not want a gallery here.

Re: Resizing and uploading photos
It's the same difference, something can't exist on the web unless it is on the web! Whether you chose to put it in a gallery or it gets into one without your input it is the same thing. Better to have it in a gallery under your control than floating around on its own!

Re: Resizing and uploading photos
For instance on dpreview I can attach an image to a post which at the time exists only on my computer. On this site I first have to upload an image to the web somewhere like Flickr, or to this site's gallery, then I can use it in my post. On dpreview the file goes directly from my computer and remains attached to the post, it does not go into a gallery unless it is an entry in a Challenge.
