Alternative to Virgin Media's 'Catch Up' facility?

I'm thinking of moving from Virgin Media for broadband, TV and 'phone, but would miss their facility for catching up of past programmes if I just use the DTV or Freesat for television.

I'm guessing that a 'box' is available with a built-in HD, that can continuously record several channels at once for later viewing.

Does anyone know of and can recommend such thing, please?

Jim

Re: Alternative to Virgin Media's 'Catch Up' facility?

I have had a Humax YouView box for quite a while, it works very well for me. Does all that you are asking. It can record two shows at once. There is also a free phone app to set up recordings which works well.

You don't get as many channels as you would on Virgin but you don't have to pay anything once you have the box.

There is also Freesat which is similar and gives more channels, but needs a properly set up dish.

If you are near a branch of Richer Sounds or John Lewis pop in and have a chat with them (usual disclaimers). They can give you the latest info.

Thanks for the reply.

I've got a Freesat box, but programmes aren't stored for 'catch up'.

If you don't want to record locally there are options on Freesat and Freeview to "go back in time..." to use the iPlayer etc. providing you have a suitable broadband connection.
http://www.freesat.co.uk/help/freetime/what-is/catch-up
https://www.freeview.co.uk/why-freeview/freeview-play

You can also use devices like the Amazon Fire TV Stick to access iPlayer etc. again if you have the broadband speed.

Humax are well regarded in the recorder market. I use a Windows 7 PC and when that was out of action I was surprised by how little we missed the recordings vs. using internet catchup services.
The only drawback is that on the commercial channels you can't fast forward through the adverts.
