Thanks Paul.
Just got myself the digital print by Jeff Schewe and working my way through it.

The clarkvision article surprised me somewhat, I'm sure I read elsewhere else that digital had a lower DR compared to film. But many variables and like you life is far too busy to slave over home D&P, or invest heavily in a good quality scanner, but I do like the smell!

I remember in my teens (back in the 70s) that I was a member of the Liverpool Amateur Photographic Association. They used to have posh meeting rooms at the Bluecoat but moved to Wavertree at about the time I joined. I think it was the Mabel Fletcher Technical College, but I could be wrong. Either way they had a superb darkroom there - fully equipped with top quality kit including drying cabinets, glazers etc. My strongest memory though was the smells - it hit you as went in through the double-door trap from the library.

It's the smell that's keeping me out of the darkroom these days, I've got rather sensitive to fixer especially.

You can indeed make silver prints from digital files either by using a film writer to produce a conventional negative or by using a photo printer such as the Durst Lambda or Lightjet systems.

DeVere made an enlarger that used an LCD panel in place of the negative, I'm not sure if it's still available. The problem was the comparatively low resolution.

Of course if you're really keen you can use a 10x8" camera and make contact prints .

I'd say it probably isn't and won't be until sensors, display screens and printers can output more than 256 variations of grey. I gather that in the medical imaging world, it's possible to display 65,536 levels of grey, saved in somewhat specialised 16-bit TIFF files. What I don't know, is on 'what' this range of greys is outputted through.
