Post Focusing issue OMD em5

Hi I'm a new member
Ive had an E520 for many years always produced wonderful pin sharp photos.
However it always struggled in poor light.I'm on a tight budget.

Earlier this year I bought a 2nd hand Pentax K5ii at a really good price, its superb even with old manual K fit lens always very sharp good exposure with all lens.
A few weeks ago I bought a OMD EM5 with a MMF3 adaptor thinking it would be a big improvement over my E520.The body was on sale from SRS at £299.
Now I have to say I've tried numerous settings but I just cannot get good results with Zuiko 4/3 lens on new body any where near as good as old E520.
I've tried 9-18mm ,14-54 mk1, and SWD 50-200.Lens always seem to hunt for focus and pictures just not sharp.I bought a Sigma 60mm 2.8 lens and that works perfectly.
Has anybody any ideas as I'm getting very frustrated.
Paul

Re: Focusing issue OMD em5

Hi Paul,

The E-M5 is a m4/3 camera that uses Contrast Detect AF.

Most 4/3 lenses are designed for Phase Detect AF, that is the system used on 4/3 bodies e.g. the E520.

There exist a few 4/3 lenses that are more optimized to focus relatively quickly (1-2 s) on bodies that use CDAF. I think about the ZD 9-18/4.0-5.6, ZD 14-54/2.8-3.5II, ZD 70-300/4-5.6.

I have the E-M5 too. On lenses that are not optimized, the focusing is slow (2-3 seconds) however eventually focus will be acquired.

Re: Focusing issue OMD em5

Thanks for your reply. I was thinking that too really disappointed as wanted to use old 4/3 lens that I have.
I'm thinking of returning MMF 3 adaptor and buying old E3 body from EBay
I think it will work much better in low light than E520. And then use OMD E5 with Sigma lens that I have as its very good.
regards
Paul

Re: Focusing issue OMD em5

Hi Paul and welcome to the forum.

An E-3 will give maybe a 1 stop improvement over the E-520 in low light but certainly no more. I reckon that the E-M5 is about 2.5 stops better than the E-3 at high ISO. In all other respects the E-3 is an excellent camera.
