Just a common or garden fly, but such fun to be out again playing with a new lens!

Actually, an Eristalis hoverfly. Nice image.

Re: Communal Dragonfly, Butterfly and Insect photo thread

Thanks Harold - I do have a book on insect identification somewhere but they all look the same....!

I'm really liking this new lens, but I'm not so sure that it's quite as sharp as my kit lens. I've spent the afternoon chasing flutterbyes round the garden and having a whole load of fun!

That hourglass shape gives you Eristalis. It's a bit difficult to make out on the commonest species.

Rhinoceros Beetle

This is supposed to be a common British beetle but I have never knowingly seen one before. On a recent sunny day it landed on my wife's shirt and then wandered onto her arm. (Images shown in reverse sequence and all have been cropped).

aka Horned stag beetle or Least stag beetle, the “horn” makes it a male.

Olympus EM-1, (aperture priority), Olympus 4/3 50mm f2 macro, f9, hand-held.

Harold

Re: Communal Dragonfly, Butterfly and Insect photo thread

I did the big butterfly count today as prompted by Sir David Attenborough on BBC breakfast this morning. Here are a few of the ones I got in the 15 minute count. Not exactly macro but close, all shot with the 40-150 plus 1.4tc.

Speckled wood.

Peacock.

Green-veined white

Hopefully I got the ID correct.

Re: Communal Dragonfly, Butterfly and Insect photo thread

Common Blue Female on Lavender

I often see a blue butterfly in my garden on sunny spring and summer days. It is always a Holly Blue. Only once (2 years ago?) had I seen a different species. Yesterday was the second time. The orange spots told me that it was different.

The butterfly was on lavender which was a straggly growth amongst tall grass, etc., making close approach liable to put it to flight. (I fitted the TC to gain magnification). So I was reliant on the butterfly to present itself photogenically. I was not content with the lateral views but, as expected, getting closer and at the right angle put it to flight and I never saw it again.

The lateral views each have their good points but, with more than usual processing, they are only good enough to show what the insect looked like.

Olympus EM-1 (aperture priority), Olympus 4/3 x2 TC, Olympus 4/3 50mm f2 macro, f9, hand-held.

Harold
