Pen-F Mono mode - a little game!

Here are two interpretations of the same shot from the Pen-F. One is the camera's in-built mono profile 2 ("Tri-X mode"), the other is processed from raw in LR using my secret recipe. Now, who would like to guess which is which?

Have to say I do understand the process differentiation..............

But No 1 seems to have a slightly better quality/sharpness about it, looking at the light switch and paint brushes, to my eyes anyway.

Sorry I don't understand the Tri-X process...................

Ha, ha - Tri-X refers to Kodak's Tri-X B&W film. The Pen's mono 2 mode is seen by many to be a sort of digital imitation of it (minus the drying marks and dust specks).

Drying marks - well, you're doing something wrong.
Whatever, but the digital Pen F does not have the DR of film and has a tendency to blow highlight, not that I'm saying you have done so here. You know all about the S transfer function so I won't lecture.
I'm not convinced by digital emulations. To the casual observer the result may look realistic.

Oh I remember it well. Drying marks, dust spots and long thin scratches from somewhere in the camera

I would also go with No. 1

Not just dust and scratches but the staining on your hands when you did not wear gloves.

Tri-X a great film.

One more for the list, exposing for the shadows and developing for the highlights. I guess there's an equivalent in the menu, maybe j cog sub cog f, sub-sub cog d, sub-sub-sub cog z, that's if you can find it.

Simple - ETTR using the exposure compensation dial, no need to visit menus.

I'd go for #1 as well for the slight extra sharpness, although that could just be a bit higher contrast. Is that your version Paul?

I'll have to try that and reconstruct one of Ansel Adams Yosemite scenes.

Great news regarding menus, ie not needing them. The only menu I use is the one given to me at a restaurant.

Re: Pen-F Mono mode - a little game!

Viewed on my monitor the difference is too close to call, I wouldn't like to say which is which.

No, I can't call it either. Number 1 from the camera?

I do know it is difficult to keep camera inserted "grain" present in the image after you have downsized it for the web.

I use a specific approach :-)

If I was going to attempt that I might set the camera to manual and rely upon my ancient (but still perfectly working) Weston Master II. I just have to remember that Weston speeds are slightly faster than modern ISO equivalents.

I recommend the Sekonic 758. The second most important photographic tool after the camera. The benefit of the 758 over other lightmeters: you can calibrate the 758 to the camera, several different cameras in fact each with their own response. Brilliant!
