Rail Trail Tunnel

New Zealand has heaps of these. - Rail trails for cyclists and hikers. A bunch of friends and family of mine decided to cycle the Hauraki Rail Trail. I was the designated support driver and, having parked the support vehicle at the destination, wandered along a bit of the trail myself. This tunnel is near Karangahake.

No sooner had I taken the photo above than the rest of "The Team" arrived:

Re: Rail Trail Tunnel

Just before "The Team" left, I took this photo. These Kiwis are really dedicated to keeping fit. - Even the "Olde Farts" from the "Amigos" cycling club. Nobody under the age of 55 and most over the age of 60.

Re: Rail Trail Tunnel

Now that is a tunnel!

Seems we were not the only country stupid enough to close railways. Still, they do make excellent leisure trails.

Re: Rail Trail Tunnel

Larry, Wow, what an interesting ride that rail trail must be, your tunnel and bridge shots are great, and a very nice bunch of riders too - this takes me back three years (gee, can it be that long!) when I rode with the "Wangaratta BUGS". Unfortunately I had a very near fatal accident prompting me to sell my Cannondale. Here is a link to a ride with "Me Mates" on one of dozens of cycle tracks that interlace our town.

Great pics Mark. An incentive for me to get out the old hybrid bike, pump up the tyres and go for a pedal.

As you probably know, one of the great things about rail trails is that they aren't very steep.

Actually not quite so as far as Wang' tracks go. One of our town's toughest rides is the rail trail from Wang' to Beechworth and to Mt Beauty beyond. Unfortunately I don't have many posts on this ride. Here's a link to "Melbourne Cyclists", shot at random, I was not a participant. http://e-group.uk.net/forum/showthread.php?t=36921

Re: Rail Trail Tunnel

A longish tunnel! Nicely captured Larry. I would have to opt for the 'designated driver' every time. Don't they make you sick with their fitness.

Not when they come up with ideas like this one:

My sister (on the far right of the photo above) and her partner (on the far left) have decided to go on a cycling holiday along the Danube (the Germany & Austria bit) and through Slovenia in August this year. Would I like to come along as support vehicle driver? Wild horses and that type of thing were running through my mind. I have enough leave and, even though I don't have enough money to retire (yet), I very definitely can afford my share of this trip!

So there I go..... lugging cameras and a MacBook along with me.
